New Read - Shuna's Journey

Shuna's Journey is a 1983 manga written by Hayao Miyazaki inspired by the Tibetan folktale "The Prince Who Turned into a Dog." This story follows a prince who is looking for grain to save his people and the hardships he faces along the way.

It's well done. Miyazaki writes the entire story out while simultaneously presenting the gorgeous artwork with aesthetics inspired by traditional Tibetan imagery.

It's a great take on a folktale.

Also, interestingly, the original Japanese release date is two weeks before my literal birth date. So, that's fun.

About 20 years ago, I had an astonishing Raven experience. I’d noticed a teenager Magpie disabled by a mass of string on one foot, so next day I packed my Leatherman.
No-go in the morning, but walking home—ah! the Maggies, where’s the young’un? Opened tool, selected scissors, then calmly went & picked up the near-helpless youngster.
Immediate cacophony from Magpies, swooping etc, but they realised *I was helping* and waited. Currawongs had heard the Mag panic and flocked in to assist, then Ravens also.
However when I’d finished snipping and carefully liberated the youngster, everything went OFF. Caroling Mags, triumphal cries from Currawongs, much Raven cawing—and wildly exuberant aerobatics from all three species.
One happy statistician then finished walking home. The Mags remembered me for several years.

A variation of the observer effect is that you won’t find the rarely needed yet important object lost in your home (special adapter, cordless drill charger, the good pen, etc.) until you collapse the quantum wave function by purchasing its replacement.

If Americans could only see themselves as outsiders do, they would immediately realize they were indoctrinated victims of an ethnic nationalist fascist cult operating broadly through creepy jingoism / patriotism, conservative Christian "morality," and "greed is good" capitalist excess. Which is why Americans are never really told what is going on and why scientists, experts, education, and intellectuals are widely treated with hostility.

"Amazing. I'm living the great dream of my childhood, the scenes of kissing and embracing so often imagined and acted out. Where is the guilt I thought I would feel--and the love? The idea that going out with a boy is some kind of pinnacle of experience is definitely dead, almost laughable. Our two bookbags lie side by side in the grass, but a life together, forget it. For the first time I'm terrorized by the idea of marriage. I'm beginning to emerge, to disencumber myself."

Wow that station wall is maddening. I'd be sitting there getting a migraine (like the one I have now) trying to make order out of those disordered letters or at least finding words! And the words I'm guessing are French!
in reply to David P

@pewnack ooh, sorry you have a migraine! I can see some fragments of French words from my rusty schoolboy level knowledge, but regardless, I kind of like looking at the pattern. No idea if it's part of a series or is something with a point that I'm not seeing.

Hey, if you're passably smart, sorta funny, unemployed and married I can't promise I won't fall in love with you.

I'm being forced to change a website password, and it doesn't tell you the requirements, just when you haven't met one of them. This is fucking ridiculous.
