3I ATLAS: Tails of an Interstellar Comet

Explanation: How typical is our Solar System? Studying 3I/ATLAS, a comet just passing through, is providing clues. Confirmed previous interstellar visitors include an asteroid, a comet, a meteor, and a gas wind dominated by hydrogen and helium. Comet 3I/ATLAS appears relatively normal when compared to Solar System comets, therefore providing more evidence that our Solar System is a somewhat typical star system. For example, Comet 3I/ATLAS has a broadly similar chemical composition and ejected dust. The featured image was captured last week from Texas and shows a green coma, a wandering blue-tinted ion tail likely deflected by our Sun's wind, and a slight anti-tail, all typical cometary attributes. The comet, visible with a telescope, passed its closest to the Sun in late October and will pass its closest to the Earth in mid-December, after which it will return to interstellar space and never return.

Wir haben leider schon zu oft auf Mahnwachen gestanden, uns mit halbherzigen Fahrbahn Malereien abspeisen und vom Kraftverkehr an den Rand drängen lassen. Fahrradfahren in Berlin ist gefährlich, holprig, schmalspurig und endet oft konzeptlos im irgendwo. Unter dem altbekannten Motto "Wir blockieren nicht den Verkehr, wir sind der Verkehr" wollen wir sichtbar und laut für die Rechte von Radfahrenden demonstrieren."

Op 21 december willen de neonazi’s van de Nederlandse Nationalistische Beweging (NNB) een demonstratie houden in het centrum van Apeldoorn. De NNB is een nieuwe, vreselijke club, met teksten als:
- ‘Er is niks mis mee om nationaal-socialist te zijn’
- ‘Abortus is bij rasgenoten moord, bij vreemden een noodzaak’
- ‘Het blanke ras staat boven alles’
Neonazi’s die door de straten marcheren, niet als iets van 1940-1945, maar een hedendaagse realiteit: wat een schrikbeeld voor elk weldenkend mens. Zeker als je tot een kwetsbare minderheid behoort. We kunnen dit niet zonder weerwoord laten gebeuren. De NNB verdient een keiharde NEE.
Veel mensen waren verontwaardigd nadat de Tweede Kamer een motie aannam waarin antifa (antifascisme) een terroristische organisatie werd genoemd. Steun kwam uit allerlei hoeken. Dat is mooi, maar de strijd gebeurt ook op straat. Dit is het moment voor actie.
Kom zondag 21 december naar Apeldoorn voor een vreedzame demonstratie tegen deze neonazi’s, tegen fascisme. Wij staan voor vrijheid en gelijkwaardigheid.

¿Más de fluidos, drogas duras, blandas, alcohol y rockstarismo? ¿Otro trago de ese cóctel de vampirismo, after-punk, afectaciones emocionales, realismo sucio, ciclotimia y todo un elenco de clichés literarios? Sí y no.
Proponemos la relectura de primeras novelas, aveces únicas, que en su día parecieron pseudo existencialismo o confesionalismo exprés. Imperfectas, como tantas obras clásicas, aunque exhiben sus costuras no son mera conjetura estilística, sino el testimonio de que la after-nada no ha cambiado y que en el trasegar generacional los clamores y la indolencia posadolescentes han devenido reclamos válidos.
Nos pondremos la camiseta (de Sonic Youth) y durante cuatro sesiones irrumpirán sonoridades para acompañar una reflexión colectiva y plural sobre las marginalidades urbanas y de los extrarradios, locación por naturaleza de una historia atemporal donde todas las formas de la rabia, el asco y la indiferencia son estelares. No faltarán los intercambios con el cine y las culturas alternas.
Opcional llegar con la obra leída por completo. No es un seminario de crítica. Leeremos fragmentos y haremos videoaudiciones. Se tolera eruditos musicales. Se anhela la participación de principiantes. Y cómo no, es posible “participar activamente desde el silencio”.
Y al final ensayaremos una cacografía donde plasmar nuestras impresiones. O no.

Explanation: Big, beautiful spiral galaxy NGC 1055 is a dominant member of a small galaxy group a mere 60 million light-years away toward the aquatically intimidating constellation Cetus. Seen edge-on, the island universe spans over 100,000 light-years, a little larger than our own Milky Way galaxy. The colorful, spiky stars decorating this cosmic portrait of NGC 1055 are in the foreground, well within the Milky Way. But telltale pinkish star forming regions and young blue star clusters are scattered through winding dust lanes along the distant galaxy's thin disk. With a smattering of even more distant background galaxies, the deep image also reveals a boxy halo that extends far above and below the central bulge and disk of NGC 1055. The halo itself is laced with faint, narrow structures, and could represent the mixed and spread out debris from a satellite galaxy disrupted by the larger spiral some 10 billion years ago.

Comet Lemmon and the Milky Way

Explanation: What did Comet Lemmon look like when it was at its best? One example is pictured here, featuring three celestial spectacles all at different distances. The closest spectacle is the snowcapped Meili Mountains, part of the Himalayas in China. The middle marvel is Comet Lemmon near its picturesque best early this month, showing not only a white dust tail trailing off to the right but its blue solar wind-distorted ion tail trailing off to the left. Far in the distance on the left is the magnificent central plane of our Milky Way Galaxy, featuring dark dust, red nebula, and including billions of Sun-like stars. Comet C/2025 A6 (Lemmon) is already fading as it heads back into the outer Solar System, while the Himalayan mountains will gradually erode over the next billion years. The Milky Way Galaxy, though, will live on -- forming new mountains and comets -- for many billions of years into the future.

Maandagavonden zijn voor de Antwerpenaren het moment om samen de straat op te gaan en hun stem te laten horen tegen het onrecht dat wereldwijd plaatsvindt!
Vooral ook om op te komen voor een vrij Palestina en voor de kinderen van Gaza die al te lang lijden onder koloniale bezetting.
Week na week eisen wij van ons stadsbestuur dat het alle banden met Israël verbreekt en stopt met elke vorm van medeplichtigheid.
Maandag staan we terug op de suikerrui. Ondanks het buitenproportionele politionele machtsvertoon, laten we ons niet intimideren. Protest is een recht, geen gunst.
Zorg goed voor elkaar en tot maandag!

in reply to Everybody Votes! • • •also, for the young-uns in here: cursive handwriting existed to accommodate feather quill pens (and their other analogs, people were creative with their ink) so that the writer could write without lifting the pen as frequently, which both protected the frail nib and quill as well as minimized ink drops from falling onto the paper.
With a bit of practice, cursive writing is usually faster than print writing and can be very legible, but it seems to be a dying craft.
