One wild thing about these times is, it used to be FRINGE to have gas masks and n95s in your basement. Now, that's not even the prepper stockpile for us, it's our "shit we bought in 2020 back when the pandemic was at its peak and the cops were teargassing our neighborhood"

"You [individual] can save the world, kid!" messaging inundated us as children in the nineties, and really did us a profound disservice, I think. It taught our generation to privilege lifestyle activism and saviorism over direct action focused on systemic change, with disastrous consequences.

But I've also seen a horde of Phillies fans very nearly tip over an entire school bus full of riot cops, a bus that could have flattened any one of them on a different occasion, lol. So I know materially that enough people can overwhelm a machine. It's just a lesson needing further internalizing.

People voted for Trump because they supported fascism. Grocery costs have soared and it is incredibly difficult to feed a family affordably right now. Trying to downplay the latter because you're mad about the former just pisses off the folks still struggling.

This is what it boils down to. The norms were never gonna stop Trump anyway. Never have, never will. So i's pretty silly to complain about Biden setting a bad example for Trump when it comes to norm keeping or breaking.

There are lots of norms I WISH Biden had broken, and this does kind of rub salt in the wound re: him being so ostentatiously high-minded about norms that he didn't do more to counter the threat of fascism until it was too late.

But also, again, even if I did care about norms? There's never really been a "don't do pardons to save your buds" norm. When I was a kid everyone was complaining about Clinton doing that with his brother and his donors.
