Please let this be his single-minded obsession to the exclusion of all others for the next four years

But also not to the point of actually invading Canada, I could entirely see him floating that

Choisissez bien vos assos. Certaines sont absolument catastrophiques, gèrent très mal les dons et sont maltraitantes envers leurs bénévoles.

I think the most likely scenario is that Meta aggressively and opportunistically copycats TikTok, either as a standalone (like they did with Threads trying to capitalize on the Vichy-ification of Twitter) or by bloating Instagram. And does it passingly well enough that teens grudgingly shift.

Of course this all hinges on what happens with the Trump admin, which in turn hinges on who's offering the most on pay-to-play going forward. There's mega-donor Jeff Yass who is heavily invested in TikTok and is in Trump's one ear likely asking him to kill the TikTok ban...

...but then Zuck went and kissed the ring at Mar-a-Lago and promised who knows what for the ban to stay in place. I would guess it all depends on who is offering the biggest bribe.

Interesting read! I haven’t looked at what happened to the Web Monetization API. I do think that meta tags or a file in site root are the right spot for this: you can already put written text in a page and this is primarily for programmatic usage. Or… an #atproto solution! 🧵

Briefly, the ILF is currently rebuilding the Coil system, except with real money. That requires us to comply with a lot of rules and regulations, which is why it took so long. But we're getting somewhere.

Link to the write-up, please? I am not familiar with it.

I don't know what GNU Taler is, though I can ask internally.

Ah, so the original Coil was just a PoC?

I believe Taler are currently doing Proof of Concept experiments in the EU, working with some banks and vendors. Here's it is;

At some point I'm meaning to do a deep dive into digital payment systems. Mapping out all the various layers involved, and where existing institutions and projects fit in the stack. It was one of a number of deep dive research projects that got shelved by 2020 ; )

in reply to Strypey

Yes, Coil was a proof of concept. It worked with "donations" because it didn't have the correct licences to truly work with other people's money.

The system described in the article is exactly what we're trying to recreate.

I'll be watching with interest. I'd very much like to see simple web payments integrated into Takahē using vendor-neutral open standards. Like what @write_as described in that piece.

It could also be a boon to projects like OpenCollective and the various fiscal hosting services that grew out of it.

A new weekend arrived, it is time for the report from my #opensource projects. Changed things: a roguelike game, a static code analyzer, GUI library (all in #Nim) plus restarted work on system cleaner for FreeBSD. More info: www.laeran.pl.eu.org/blog/devblog... Happy weekend, everyone. 😀

It's not just that power users here generate a ton of free content, keeping Bluesky humming. Even despite past disagreements with devs, we have been EVANGELISTS bringing our audiences here and annoying much bigger accounts into doing the same. Growth here has hinged on power user goodwill.

RE: bsky.app/profile/did:plc:di7ep…

I cannot imagine what Jesse Singal could possibly bring to this site that would be worth squandering the goodwill of the entire existing power user base

Experts like @blackamazon.bsky.social have been shouting from the rooftops that dev team needs to stop acting like social media was invented yesterday & LEARN THE LESSONS that two decades of social media have provided. Including... Listen to experts, especially those from vulnerable communities.
in reply to Gwen Snyder is uncivil

We are not summer babes here, we are a community of people who left Twitter (and the audiences that, for many of us, provided career opportunities and/or income streams) because we were tired of the abuse and the far right propagandists. We are not here to be guinea pigs for libertarians.
