I think this is the best explanation of Musk, period. He didn't arrive at his current ideology because he's ideological. He arrived at it because he's desperately incompetent & needs a government that'll award him money despite his incompetence. Which Trump was desperate enough to promise to do.

But Elon's takeover involved putting in place someone so totally craven and so famously disloyal that I cannot imagine this Hail Mary is going to save him. Just like any conman whose con caught up to him, he's on borrowed time.
