American composer and pianist Amy Marcy Beach was born #OTD in 1867.

Her "Gaelic" Symphony, premiered by the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1896, was the first symphony composed and published by an American woman. She was one of the first American composers to succeed without the benefit of European training, and one of the most respected and acclaimed American composers of her era.

T.D. Lee changed science in China and my life. This is what I owe to him

Every self-respecting scientist and scientific institution should join Mastodon, don't you think? And leave X - or at the very least be present on Mastodon as well.

Yes!
In fact, everybody who is still on there has by now become very suspicious, at least in my mind. If all that is going on there is not a deal-breaker for them, what other things are they ok with?
in reply to Björn Brembs

Then again, they are sending a clear message as to how much hopes we should pin on them when it comes to defending democracy.
in reply to Björn Brembs

@brembs Is the common expectation that scientists are particularly likely to have enough analytical skills and insight to maintain a moral compass perhaps somewhat exaggerated?
in reply to VelteropⓐⓊ🪂🇪🇺🇳🇱🇬🇧🇩🇪

Well, for that one would probably need to compare the fraction of scientists still there to that of a control group?

But apart from that, what worries me specifically about scientists still there is when they call the Nazi Chatroom "Twitter". I mean, if they deny that unpleasant reality, why shouldn't they also deny the unpleasant reality of an ugly fact falsifying their beautiful pet theory? I find this very concerning.

@brembs Is the appropriate analogy shopping at Home Depot (of which I am guilty)? Explained simply by convenience.
in reply to Richard Sever

@richardsever
Wouldn't be my analogy. Here's the one I propose:

A bunch of regulars at a bar get surprised that the owner sold the bar to a gang of Nazis. Now the bar is decorated with Nazi symbols on the outside and populated by Nazis on the inside. The regulars still meet there, though, sitting at a table looking out the window: that way, they don't have to see neither the Nazis inside nor the decorations outside. But everybody looking in sees them still sitting there.

in reply to Björn Brembs

@brembs During George W Bush first term, I heard many scientists say they would leave the US if he was elected for a second term. He was and they didn't. Feels a bit like that (but worse).
in reply to Richard Sever

@richardsever
Yes, that really did irritate me quite a bit, too. Goes to show how few actually take themselves seriously. Another reason to question what comes out of some people's mouths (or articles).
There are multiple reasons for the replciability crisis...

The banning of The Cradle from Facebook and Instagram shows a troubling alliance with Israeli-linked groups to silence voices critical of the occupation state, especially those media outlets covering its adversaries’ narratives.

On 16 August, Meta permanently banned The Cradle from Facebook and Instagram.

The officially-stated grounds were purported violations of community guidelines for “praising terrorist organizations”.

“Strengthening bipartisan support for the US-Israel relationship”: this is how the American-Israeli Affairs Public Committee (AIPAC) on X, profiles itself, giving the impression that it is only a simple group of lobbyists, among thousands of others, in a land where lobbying for whatever cause is legal, welcomed and encouraged.

This innocent statement does not convey the truth about the role AIPAC plays in domestic US politics.

This resurgence of Russia propaganda is very dangerous because it's going to convince a lot of people that cheating the election is a patriotic duty to fight Russia.

But the thing is, Trump is going to win. And I think it is highly probable that there will be a massive vote fraud investigation where tens of thousands of people are going to get 10-20 year prison sentences.

Extreme leftists are incredibly odd people. They all claim to have read 1984, Gulag Archipelago, etc. They howl endlessly about "dictatorship" and dissidents getting carted off in the night. But then they go and do the exact thing that CAN get them locked up forever, by normal reasonable judges, applying existing and generally agreed upon laws.

in reply to Caleb James DeLisle

do you really expect that people will go to prison for anti trump vote fraud? nobody really went to prison for BLM riot bullshit. they didn't even try. except with people like rittenhouse.

All types of activism going to trap you at the same place - political, intellectual, religious, environmental, medical, etc. etc. The worst kind of monsters those that are living inside of you, and activism creates those special types of monsters.

German landscape painter Caspar David Friedrich was born #OTD in 1774.

He is best known for his allegorical landscapes, which typically feature contemplative figures silhouetted against night skies, morning mists, barren trees or Gothic ruins. His primary interest was the contemplation of nature, and his often symbolic and anti-classical work seeks to convey a subjective, emotional response to the natural world.

The Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog reminds me of the Millais portrait of Ruskin, perhaps taken from another view.

Probably not having an affair with the subject's wife like Millias, Ruskin, and Effie Gray, one may hope.
