In his 'Journal of the Plague Year' Daniel Defoe gives some interested insights into the superstitions of Londoners during the time of contagion. Bay, tobacco, garlic and vinegar were believed to act against it. One popular amulet had the word 'Abracadabra' written out six times, one under the other with letters missed at each end, forming an inverted triangle. Many felt the plague had been foretold by comets in 1664 and 1665, but Defoe wryly noted that no fortune teller had successfully predicted their own demise. #London #folklore #literature #weird #history
