Congrats to Robert Tarjan and his collaborators on winning the best paper award at the 2024 Symposium on Foundations of Computer Science!
Their work, featured in Quanta Magazine, has proven that one algorithm — created by Edsger Dijkstra — is the "universally optimal" way to answer a quintessential problem: how to find the best path between two points.

If you haven't voted there are only three days left to make your voices heard and deliver that sweet victory defeat to Trump and his fascist.
Lets make history.
Please do not forget that our planet's fate in regards to global warming is also on our ballots.
When Joe Biden took office we had 36 gigawatts of solar and wind on the U.S. grid in February. This last February that had increased to 59 GW, from 11% to 18%. That only went from 9% to 11% during Trump's administration.
There is over 2 GW of clean electricity waiting to access our electricity grids and Republican Attorney Generals are fighting against grid expansions.

More people dying from lack of medical care in Texas must be a feature, not a bug according to Greg Abbott.
My tax dollars can go to hospital care for anyone who needs it. I don't care if they're citizens, green card holders, or undocumented. Immigrants contribute more than they take, and we should all be part of one health system anyway.
Texas doesn't elect a new governor until 2026, but vote blue and get rid of terrible Republicans at every opportunity.

"[Damian Collins, a human geography professor and housing expert at the University of Alberta] is also skeptical of the argument that the situation hasn't gotten worse.
'The fact is that we have this incredible number of people experiencing homelessness in our city'"
But if you frame the issue such that it hasn't gotten worse, you can just policy drift your way right past it, duh!
Edmonton homelessness numbers surge toward 5,000, highest recorded since at least 2019

Umberto Eco’s List of the 14 Common Features of #Fascism.
Eco reduces the qualities of what he calls “Ur-Fascism, or Eternal Fascism” down to 14 “typical” features. “These features,” writes the novelist and semiotician, “cannot be organized into a system; many of them contradict each other, and are also typical of other kinds of despotism or fanaticism. But it is enough that one of them be present to allow fascism to coagulate around it.”

Thank you, very interesting! A version of these 14 points that has been adapted to the current situation can be found here:
#PPOD: On 1 November 1977, a new minor planet, 2060 Chiron, was found in images taken at Palomar Observatory. Centaurs are small objects that orbit somewhere between the asteroid belt and the Kuiper Belt, often having the characteristics of both asteroids and comets. This image from the Hubble Space Telescope shows the faint coma that surrounds Chiron, which was first seen in 1989. Credit: NASA/ESA/Hubble Space Telescope/Karen Meech

He used rear projection for the image and side-illumination and a camera underneath for the touch point capture.
