Hubble image of Arp 107, also known as UGC 5984.

The one-armed spiral and its smaller elliptical companion galaxy are gravitationally interacting with one another, which is likely responsible for the spiral galaxy's unusual shape, as well as the bridge of gas and stars that connects the two galaxies.

Disaster preparedness lesson: cool off that refrigerator more often/longer. (Freezer: fine, ice cream did not even melt a bit; leftover meat in the fridge: <retch> <vomit> <hurk hurk hurk>)

*I think* he means turns the temperature down (colder) on your fridge so it kicks on more frequently, but chances are this is something you’d have to do when one get a PSPS alert.
in reply to J

I have a 1000W "solar generator" (really just a big battery, LOL) which I was using to cool off the fridge every 12 hours or so... apparently that is not enough to keep leftover meat from going bad. (fine for the freezer and non-meat items... but hooooo booooy on that meat).
in reply to AI6YR Ben

Ah! Good to know. We may have to purchase something like that for our cottage. I think the stuff in the fridge is likely not salvageable with us not having power for at least 6 hours or more.
in reply to Restless Lip Syndrome

In Hawaii's temps? Oh yeah, that is going on too long. Hope the freezer holds up, I use the ice cream as a measure of safety. (ice cream didn't melt at all? GOOD! Melted: OH CRAP) - some people put a marble at the top of a frozen bottle of water, if the marble dropped to the bottom then you know your freezer was bad at some point.
in reply to AI6YR Ben

I was sorta keen on this (bioliteenergy.com/pages/backup) especially because of the footprint… but goddamn that’s expensive and it’s not out yet. But I sorta like the “set it up and forget about it” concept.

Well, which is it? 🤔

As someone who's worked with battery systems for decades, it absolutely astounds me what startups are charging for simple things

So you're buying a white box with a cord that comes out of it

The stuff inside the box would cost you less than $100

But they are charging $2,100

It definitely looks pretty! And not having to do any learning or connecting things up is nice. (I'm not being sarcastic. I know we all have limited time and energy)

Up to you whether it is $2,000 worth of nice

Just be super careful with that hummus! That'll kill you if it gets warm for too long

in reply to NilaJones

@NilaJones Is there a certain pathogen that makes hummus specifically risky?
in reply to AK

@ak
It's not a pathogen thing, it's a human thing

Any type of bean products will make you very sick, because of the protein in the beans. But people don't necessarily think beans when they think hummus

As I said elsewhere in this thread to Ben, other examples are frozen peas that have thawed out, soy milk, bean dip, leftover Thai food with tofu in it (or egg, or tempeh)...

Especially people who are not super into cooking, don't necessarily think about the ingredients in the things that they have

@AK

You don’t say!! This can’t be true. Shocking.

But now I have another example to use when I talk about how it is important to vote for the position of coroner. Because the science denying lazy republicans do this on purpose. Because they’re in a death cult.

According to a new US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (#CDC) analysis, only about a fifth of patients who died within a month of being discharged after an influenza hospitalization had influenza listed on their death certificate, hinting that deaths from flu-related complications may be undercounted.
