Which -- Matt's got his money - the rest of the people in that organization - probably not so much. They'll be the ones who feel it if the wheels fall completely off.
It seems like Matt basically wants to take his toys and go home, but is pissed that he can't because WP is way bigger than him. The logo, the name, and the money are all he has and that's useless on it's own.
I don't think any of these people have officially said they're joining a fork... yet.
It's more just unspoken subtext of what they _are_ saying. We want governance changes, we want product direction changes. When stakeholders in a FOSS project start asking for stuff like that, "... or we'll fork" is a sort of implicit corollary. Like, we're trying this the polite way, in hopes that we don't have to do it the impolite way.
@glent @ShiitakeToast not only do I vehemently agree with this, I'll go one further: it's the raison d'être of the corporate structure. It is supposed to build a business that is resilient to the faults of any single person, up to & very much including its senior leadership positions. Any company not managing this feat is whiffing one of its most crucial goals.
(Not sufficient, of course, only necessary. You still have to make payroll, have income, not alienate your workforce...)

I think #VLC leaning into the “AI” branding for their on-device transcription and translation service is a #marketing blunder. The services offered by the models can be useful, especially for accessibility reasons. But calling it “AI” is tone-deaf, and plays right into the (righteous) anti-AI sentiment which I suspect is shared by much of their user base.
In any case, they’re using OpenAI’s models AFAICT, which were probably created through questionable means, and that gives me pause. AI’s ethics are dubious, even when used for noble ends. Legitimizing #OpenAI as a supplier is problematic, given their high likelihood of proving to be a big net negative to society in the long run.
If you find the feature useful for accessibility, by all means use it. But I don’t think I’ll be enabling it. Hopefully that also saves me several gigabytes of disk storage for not downloading the models.

Whisper is an absolute god-send for the hard of hearing. Previous machine transcription tools were sketchy at best, as evidenced by the all caps garbage we see on cable news. Whisper is competitive with human transcribers, and the built-in translation (in addition to transcription) is an incredible leap forward.
They failed on the marketing but this is a good addition.
Like I said, I’m not judging people who use it for accessibility reasons, and I’m not dunking on VLC for adding it.
But it’s sad that such a good product came out of such questionable means, and is likely helping to funnel money into an enterprise that will very likely be used to increase societal injustice.
The way I’m looking at it is they could have just made it another API they charge for. They didn’t have to give away this world class, cutting-edge tool, for free.
I don’t know how an org choosing to deploy Whisper on prem helps OpenAI, but I suppose it’s possible. Would be curious to see the degrees of separation.
