AirBnB can go right straight to hell for what they've done to our housing market. Now they want to act like the good people saving displaced folks from the wildfires...
Notice they are not giving up on their profit and paying for longer stays themselves. They are asking for you and I to pay the hoarders of homes to allow evacuees and first responders to stay longer. They, of course, will take the tax credit and profit.

Be sure to let them know the Fediverse is kind of like the Marvelverse. Except instead of being a universe of Marvel, it's a universe about Kevin Federline! The Fediverse!!!!
.......I just realized that joke is so old that it's not culturally relevant anymore. Nobody knows who K-Fed was......or cares.
Dammit! It's a funny joke if this were 2006!

Nah. 2007 was the year "The Big Bang Theory" began airing. Clearly not a good year for comedy.
Bananza!
There should be a link, that redirects you to the registration page of a random (maybe based on geo ip) Lemmy server. Just don't mention to the user that they have a choice of servers. Just have them register and get on. Later, while using the Fediverse, they will learn how it works and be able to understand what it means to choose a Lemmy server yourself.
Anything else is just too complicated for the average person, I think. Hell, I think domain names other than lemmy.xxx is confusing some people.

This works. Please do so politely.
Found this out from that subreddit: dansup-open-letter.github.io/
~~That's very interesting. It did change my view of dansup.~~
edit: just like the comments said, most points seem to be exaggerated and mostly bs upon a closer look.
As the author said in the website, saying a platform is open source when you haven't even released the source is nothing but wrong. And that is not the only thing he has done it seems.
~~I personally can't take his apologies seriously after his cocky harassments.~~
Many of the points are bullshit and that's without even having any context, it's evident from the posts themselves.
Like the part where he allegedly "threatened legal action" - all he was saying is that outside fedi/oss that would mean a legal action, sounds like pointing out the advantages of oss/fedi, not threatening a legal action.
Typical infighting with open-source folks. It's a personality war with nerds. Personally, id ignore the bs drama. Every project has their share.
Source: I contribute to open source and have absolutely gone nuclear a few times
I would urge you to re-read that and scrutinize the claims because I do not think that should ruin your view of Dan. Think about the claims and ask your self if you really care about those points.
That letter comes off as extremely pathetic. The guy is human. Nothing said there was crazy or rude or worth canceling support for a over. None of the nitpicked points had nearly enough evidence or context for people to make a judgement. The presentation was extremely bias and borderline untrue.
For example "I am also in talks with @hazy! to join our team" is not an official offer to join the team. Yet this letter presents it as a set in stone offer that Dan went back on for unjustified reasons. Dan gave his reasons why the offer fell through and if he is to be believed (and if he isnt) then the negotiations fell through and thats normal and ok.
Another example. This letter says Dan is so mean to his fellow fedi devs calling them rats. Then shows 3 instances of Dan clearly responding to attacks against him. Why can these "fellow" fedi devs attack dan but Dan cannot defend himself? The comments for Dan were unbelievably tame. He does not call fedi devs rats he calls some of the people attacking him rats. There is a big difference there.
I would push back on any example in that doc (except the open source one) because they all seem very stupid.
People start these projects as a hobby and users expect higher than corporate level professionalism its insane. You want people to be human but you dogpile anyone who acts human.
That also does make me doubt how true it actually is. But as you said, that open source one is real. So I guess I'll just revert my view to how it was before. Noone is perfect after all.

I see that hexbear.net, lemmygrad.ml, and Lemmy.ml are all recommendations there. So there might be a problem with that plan... They hate the West, whereas people in Reddit are FROM the West, and overall even if they join Lemmy, I cannot imagine them remaining here for very long.
I almost quit Lemmy after even just a couple of mere discussions with people on those instances - I sure as fuck would not have stuck around if my entire instance was surrounded by them!
Would YOU join Truth.Social, the Alt-Right network? Well, here at Lemmy, we are the Alt-Left one. It is zero surprise to me at all that centrists on Reddit are not desiring to come to this place that is so highly unwelcoming to ~~them~~ anyone who does not use Linux btw.

This. Techies know custom domains are a thing. A LOT of people are going to look askance at anything that isn't among the most common TLDs. I mean, lemmy.zip is kinda funny. But it also screams "don't click me, zip files from an unknown source are dangerous!"
...and now I'm having intrusive thoughts about exe being a TLD. I'm-a go lay down until the voices stop.
lemmy.xxx
Risky click.
Edit: It's unregistered. Which I view as a total failure of the Lemmy community.

Also it would be nice to be able to view "All" for a community that shares the same name across all federated instances.

I don't even bother with the largest communities here anymore, which all seem like circle jerk echo chambers to me. Of the top 10 communities on Lemmy.World, I am no longer subscribed to any of them. And then of the next 10, I am only subscribed to Not the Onion and Fediverse.
Just like Reddit, the largest ones have most of the toxicity. The niche subs are way more chill. Unfortunately, being on Lemmy.World you can't interact with any of the content on Beehaw - which has odd moderation behaviors, chief among them being that people must be "nice* whatever that means.
So more niche subs might be to your liking as well. You can't force people to like what you say though, only either tailor your comments to match their viewpoints or else move to where yours are at least respected and hopefully even welcomed.
You can test that assumption at your convenience by making a post or even just a reply in !ChapoTrapHouse@hexbear.net. I don't think it will turn out like you hoped.
My point is that it highly depends which community you say something in. The more niche the more likely that is to be true but the popular ones seem full of people just waiting to dunk on people's poor judgement - ChapoTrapHouse even explicitly says that right in the sidebar area!
Well, you can at least download all your reddit account information into a file that you can archive locally. I wanted to make sure my best puns were preserved at all costs 😅

I have a question.
How, if possible, can I log in to say, discuss.online above, with this account.
Or do I need to make a second account over there.
I am using the jerboa app at the moment if that helps.
Also, related, is there a way to just, use my Mastodon account, and drop this one completely?

You can view/comment/vote on all of the content there while logged into lemmy.world. As an example, you should be able to click this !flipperzero@programming.dev and participate there. or !AskUSA@discuss.online.
Also, related, is there a way to just, use my Mastodon account, and drop this one completely?
I am not a fan of "microblogging", so I am not 100% certain. I have seen a lot of posts/comments from Mastodon on lemmy instances, they are the people using hashtags.
Kbin and Mbin are Lemmy-like systems that also hooks into microblogging much easier, so you might be able to do a one account thing there much easier.
Again, not certain because microblogging is not my jam.
You can interact with Discuss.online communities clicking this kind of links: !AskUSA@discuss.online
Another example: !casualconversation@lemm.ee
A community with a few guides: !newtolemmy@lemmy.ca
You can't use a Mastodon account to log in to a Lemmy instance.
I didn't see the Reddit link for a second so I'm like is this the fediverse Community commenting about how many people are talking in the fediverse community.
The concept of that made me chuckle
A huge barrier for some is picking the instance and figuring which community they should follow.
Figuring out which communities on which servers to subscribe to is way more important than figuring out which server to post from.
I wanted to give you some shade for not posting any links to back up your claims.
There was a rumor going around that EULAs can be easily attacked, but when I did a very unthorough search of it, I found the end of this wikipedia article states otherwise.
I can't see downvotes and a lemmy.world admin threatened banning me for my half of a sarcastic spat.
Instances definitely matter.
no, it does matter, because of the "local" feed.
I am in favor of creating something intermediate between "local" and "global". For example, it should also show you a few posts of "neighboring" servers, but not so much from servers who are further removed.
But that effectively goes in the direction of creating a recommendation algorithm, which is a notoriously difficult topic, because everyone will complain about the results.
Which default instance when LW is slow for some people in the US? lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/36299751
And you can't recommend an American instance to Europeans as applicable laws are different
A few Lemmy.world users have been complaining that the website is slow for them, what is your experience?
Most recent examples, seems like Americans users are mostly impacted.the site (or at least lemmy.world) is sooo slooow. Basic functions like loading images take me back to the dial-up era of “click the image then do something else while it loads,” which is downright ridiculous in the 2020s. Again I’ve stuck with it because I want to support the fediverse, but 99% of users won’t.Additional example
It also doesn’t help that it’s slow as fuck on desktop compared to the others I tried. Is lemm.ee much faster than lemmy.world for you?
Yes, MUCH. Sh.itjust.works is much faster as well. I don’t know if it’s because LW is still on 0.19.3 or what, but it’s a very significant difference.
lemm.ee/post/53056454/176571073rd comment below
So slow unfortunatelyWell, it took me 2 page load attempts and 60 solid seconds to get as far as being able to leave this comment, so… Yeah, sometimes it is slow as dirt.Images have been fine for me, I’ve given up on videosNote: if this post seems familiar, it's because it was originally posted on !asklemmy@lemmy.world . It has since then been removed as a "support question". Not sure why asking people if they've been impacted about the instance that hosts 30% of the whole Lemmy userbase is a support question, but I'll revisit that tomorrow.
I know plenty of genuinely amazing coders who have no idea how an operating system
Such a person cannot be an "amazing coder".
I'm not making any claims that require sources or links, it's simply a philosophy and a fact of life, depending how you look at it.
Just because something is a rule and you may face consequences for breaking it, does not mean that you must follow it. You always have the choice and the option to refuse to follow a rule or a law.
