I did a brief writeup about healthchecks.io, a self-hostable dead-man's switch for monitoring cron jobs. It’s a great tool that does exactly what you want. I put in the shell code I use for my backup script.
It's applicable to nearly any job that needs to run on a schedule and you only want to know if it (a) didn't run; or (b) ran but failed.

Wow. Router maker Zyxel says it has no plans to release a patch for two *actively exploited* flaws in its routers affecting potentially thousands of customers.
