UPDATE: The number is now 537. To put things in perspective, here are some things the number is bigger than:

-A tiny hamster
-Trump's hands
-Most atoms
-Baby Godzilla
-Smaller, less respectable numbers

Dan Carr, who runs the Reverb Machine blog, is my absolutely favorite sound designer. He just released a free set of Yamaha DX100 factory presets, which are also compatible with the free version of Arturia's Analog Lab virtual instrument.

We can definitely use more authentic, human-made art, so if learning to make music is something you've been thinking about, there's a lot of free resources to get started.

I've been putting together a vintage MIDI corner in my workspace/home office. Master Tracks Pro on the ST is surprisingly great.

If you're looking to ever expand your list, off the top of my head: I used to really like the "Variety of Sound" effect VSTs (compressors, EQs, reverb and delay, etc.). There's also a free Steven Slate Drums VST that I've enjoyed for a bit. And free software synths like Dexed (a DX7 emulator), OB-Xd and PG-8X have almost become "classics" themselves.

Arturia's Analog Lab Play looks interesting; I'll be checking it out!

@janboddez Thank you!

I've been trying to keep the article somewhat short, there are definitely some great free instruments that I haven't mentioned, but I think that section can definitely be expanded. Making a note to do that soon!

@JessicatheVIArtist Thank you!

Yeah, this is an area where I still have a lot to learn myself. Good luck, hope you'll find things that are helpful!

Some argue that ai technology is more significant than electricity or the internet, and so it will spread fast. But there is little sign of this. Only 5-6% of American businesses said they used ai to produce goods and services in 2024, according to the country’s Census Bureau.

From economist.com/catch-up-rampage… , titled The AI productivity puzzle

What's the puzzle? It has its uses but generally this technology is not particularly useful for most people. Countless billions of dollars have been spent hyping it up to pretend that isn't the case. But reality matters.

Nowadays I think of generative AI as a power grab. It's not a useful tool for a lot of people, but it's exceptionally useful to people who want to grab and hold power, or restructure power in their favor.
