Just remember that using these devices, without a license, even on frequencies that are otherwise free to use, is not strictly legal. Also, these devices don't have encryption, so communications can be intercepted easily.
Meshtastic supports encryption, but (as far as I know) only one-to-one, and not in a group chat, limiting its utility.
it'd be hard to even tell that the laws are being broken if you're transmitting on the correct channel frequencies at the correct bandwidth
(note that amateur radio transmitters tend to transmit wider FM bandwidth than FRS radios by default, but AFAIK basically all modern stuff can be configured to do narrowband as well)
...also, GMRS radios will come preconfigured for the same channels as FRS radios (plus a few repeater input channels). they also require licensing to legally use, and the repeater input frequences are exclusive to GMRS so using them would be detectably illegal, but on the frequencies shared with FRS, it would be hard to tell that operation is illegal.
GMRS had: * 8 channels at 462.5500 to 462.7250 MHz, dedicated to it, with a 50 W maximum, intended as repeater outputs (some GMRS radios called these 1-8, nowadays they're usually called 15-22) * those same channels 5 MHz up (so 467.5500 to 467.7250), same power limit, for use solely as repeater inputs * 7 channels at 462.5625 to 462.7125 MHz, in between the 8 GMRS channels, intended for interoperability with FRS radios, with a 5 W maximum (some GMRS radios called these 9-15, nowadays they're usually called 1-7)

in 2017, the FCC then codified what people were actually doing into the definition of FRS (so, FRS radios can now use 2 watts on 1-7 and 15-22 without a license legally - if you're wondering why your modern FRS radio has terrible range on 8-14 compared to the other channels, that's why). (they also prohibited anyone from making a "FRS/GMRS" combo radio under the new regulations, but because GMRS radios can now use the FRS-exclusive channels at 0.5 W, this is effectively a meaningless prohibition.)
slap up a cheap home node (I made a Rak solar node pretty easily and with little knowledge) and you have a system. My home is at the high part of the valley that is the town, and I can cover most of it.

1/2 In spite of what many believe, the word "ham", which has no verifiable or known origin and no meaning beyond "amateur radio license holder" does not require capitalization, but equally does not NOT require it. It's a brand-new word, and any "correctness" it may have comes only from usage, not etymolgical logic.
The word, as it is and has come to be used, refers to the *operator*, not the radio. Spell it any way you like.
3-5 Watts od power, while respectable, I would keep this radio away from my head as much as possible. I used to work for a major digital radios company and we'd have internal regulations to config our devices placing a cap on max TX power - values of a fraction of a watt. I'd use an external antenna with this one if the manufacturer supplies such an accessory.
@ThePolishDispatch Ham radio operators refer to the stubby little "rubber ducky" antennas that come with handheld radios as "air-cooled dummy loads" because of their notoriously poor efficiency. Savvy operators replace them with longer, more efficient whip antennas, which waste less of the output signal hearing up the radio itself.
While that does mean that more RF power is radiated, they are paradoxically also safer: most of the output power from any whip-type antenna is emitted near the outer end. A 17" whip puts that end well above your head rather than right next to your skull as a rubber ducky does.
Keeping the RF away from your thinky bits is always a good idea.
P.S. If you don't have an amateur license, they are easy to get. And please don't use the amateur bands on these radios without one. You'll annoy the licensed users, who will report you to the licensing authorities; they in turn will locate you via direction-finding (aided by the annoyed license holders) and levy big fines, plus taking away your toys. Politeness pays.
