This was broadcast throughout Iran.

They wanted to prove they were still in charge..

One of the big conceptual questions that's unresolved in the #Fediverse is: Just what exactly is an instance for?

Yep, it's a separate installation of server software. But what exactly does instance 1 give me compared to instance 2?

Answer A: it makes no difference except on policy: who runs it, what are their TOS, moderation policy etc. The Local feed has no significance.

Answer B: Beyond that, it defines a community. The local feed is essential.

Which should it be?

Tommi 🤯 reshared this.

@tommi My take: community servers are not one thing across the fedi, nor need they be. General purpose servers might have relatively indestinct local feeds from each other, like a big food court. Everybody mixes togtether. But specialized servers like @jazztodon.com, @me.dm, @mathstodon.xyz, and @mapstodon.space are unique bistros with their own flavor - and each type works for different folks.
in reply to Tim Chambers

@tchambers @tommi One of the nice things about my second alternative is that it neatly explains why, say, a Lemmy instance is so different from a Mastodon instance -- it's because the community that's there has different needs, so they have different electronic tools at their disposal.
in reply to Johannes Ernst

@tchambers @tommi The ActivityPub network (Fediverse) is often compared to email. I know it's a dubious analogy, at best, but people don't typically pick email servers (or email service providers) based on "community". However, communities still form as an "overlay" social network through mailing lists, newsletters and so on. Why can't an "instance" simply be an ATA (Activity Transfer Agent) and clients be AUAs (Activity User Agents) with the ability for any AUA to work with any ATA?
in reply to Steve Bate

@steve @tommi

Steve I think that model works great for some.

But I actually do think it a plus for others that if you were way into Jazz, you could join @jazztodon.com and be among fellow afficianodos as well as being an onramp to the Fedi.

in reply to Tim Chambers

@tchambers @tommi @jazztodon.com That makes sense, except that I encounter many people like me who have multiple interests and participate in multiple communities. I like Jazz and Microcontrollers and Belgian Beer and...
in reply to Steve Bate

@steve @tchambers @tommi I think the biggest thing that separates AP from email is the need for moderation. When I see people moving between instances, or servers being defederated, this is the most common cause.

@hosford42 @steve @tchambers @tommi fwiw there was a time that people do choosed email servers based in community. Having an email from certain university, or linux user group, or hobbies maho@jazzworld.com if like jazz) was a thing.

And people did moved from email providers because moderation, if certain provider had a better spam management people moved to that. I would say that was one of the reasons gmail won over hotmail (and storage).

in reply to Aaron

@hosford42 @mapache @tchambers @tommi Moderation is also an issue with email-based "overlay" communities (spam and abusive behavior on mailing lists). The challenges seem roughly similar.

Re: One of the big conceptual questions that's unresolved in the #Fediverse is: Just what exactly is an instance for?

tchambers@indieweb.social this, in a nutshell. The fediverse vid AP can support both A and B, and we can wax poetic about how one is superior to the other but both are legitimate UX decisions by their respective software stacks.

I prefer B myself, of course.

@julian @tchambers @tommi
depends on our goals. depends on the software. communities (social networking) or public conversation (social media). both?

to me, mastodon rn is about replicating original twitter. the universal civic/cultural forum. answer A.

but then why be decentralized? because centralization concentrates power which breaks the whole system.

long-term, we need most using software that does all the basics w servers based on locality. add features for local community needs.

in reply to william.maggos

@wjmaggos @julian @tommi
My point: there isn't just one "fediverse wide proper goal" and there need not be.

For some communities its goal is to be it's own focused cadre of folks on more or less one topic for others its more general and mixed use and not one thing, more or less a ton of general things.

And both are fine.

in reply to Tim Chambers

@tchambers @julian @tommi
but isn't a server usually either primarily publicly facing or internal? part of the public conversation or focused on serving a community? I think that's the major distinction, lining up with answer A or B. Twitter was the former while Facebook was the latter, primarily.

I think most people prefer the latter, connecting with people they know but not having a public persona. thus the usage stats. but the former now existing has serious repercussions in society.

BREAKING: #Iranian p#arliament has just voted to close the #StraitOfHormuz.

- 20% of global oil passes through the Strait

HERE’s what to expect if successful:

- Oil Prices could spike by 30–50%+ almost immediately

- Global Inflation likely Rises

- U.S. Gas Prices likely Skyrocket. Potential $5–$7/gallon range depending on duration

- Military Escalation Risk. U.S. Navy and allies likely to respond

- Tanker delays affect oil, LNG, and related goods

Thanks #Trump.

I remember back in the 80s that ABC (I think) did a sort of war games special (Nightline, maybe?) where they projected WWIII would start in the Strait of Hormuz. Scared the hell out of me back then. Scares the hell out of me now.

Thanks, Orange Lunatic.

“Funny” that it’s Iran that follows its own laws before committing an act of war, unlike the USA where the “prez” doesn’t bother getting Congress to declare war

The image shows a husky dog lying on a person's lap, with its head resting on the person's thigh. The husky has a distinctive black and white coat with a mix of gray and white fur on its back. Its eyes are a striking blue, and it has a relaxed expression. The person's leg is visible, covered by dark blue shorts with a white stripe. In the background, there is a bicycle leaning against the wall and a computer monitor on a desk. The room has a light-colored wall and a window with blinds. Another dog, possibly a black and tan husky, is lying behind the husky in the foreground. The scene appears to be indoors, likely in a living room or bedroom.

Bin doch etwas schock verliebt 😍 .

etc..
