in reply to Jonathan Kamens 86 47 • • •Synology Drive installs MIME types at startup using `xdg-mime install`, which calls `update-mime-database ~/.local/share/mime`. This was taking so long that Drive's app indicator launch was timing out and crashing.
It turns out at some point in the past, probably due to a bug that has since been fixed, GNOME installed _all_ the system MIME types in my home directory.
I deleted them and restarted Drive and my app indicator is back.

Unfortunately, the maintainer hasn't put out a release in seven years or merged any commits to master in five years, despite multiple PRs submitted in that time, so I suspect the project is dead.
We'll see if I can resist the urge to fork it and start maintaining it again.
