From his monitoring station on a remote hill in the occupied West Bank, water operator Subhil Olayan keeps watch over a lifeline for Palestinians, the Ein Samiyah spring.

So when Israeli settlers recently attacked the system of wells, pumps and pipelines he oversees, he knew the stakes.

“There is no life without water, of course,” he said, following the attack which temporarily cut off the water supply to nearby villages.

Recognition of Palestine as a state would put beyond doubt that the Palestinian Authority (PA) is entitled to develop the natural gas resources of the Gaza Marine field, according to one of the experts that worked on the stalled project.

Michael Barron has suggested the field could generate $4bn (£3bn) in revenue at current prices and it is reasonable that the PA could receive $100m a year over 15 years.

The killing of people by Israel who are waiting for handouts in huge crowds near food points in Gaza has become a regular occurrence in the enclave.

One witness said he headed to the Al-Tina area before dawn with five of his relatives to try to get food when "Israeli soldiers" started shooting.

Israeli naval forces detained five Palestinian fishermen off the coast of Gaza City on Saturday evening while they were trying to catch food to survive, amid a worsening famine caused by Israel’s blockade on the enclave, a local official said.

The fishermen had gone to sea in search of daily sustenance, with food supplies nearly nonexistent in the markets, a representative of the Fishermen’s Syndicate in Gaza, told Anadolu.

A Palestinian baby has died of starvation in Gaza as Israel maintains its blockade on aid supplies and fires on people forced to seek food at controversial United States-backed aid sites described as death traps.

The 35-day-old infant died of malnutrition at Gaza City’s al-Shifa Hospital, director Muhammad Abu Salmiya told Al Jazeera. The unnamed infant was one of two people who succumbed to starvation in the facility on Saturday.
