God bless.

There is a moral dilemma in photographing those who sleep rough. Walking around the CBD of Sydney, they are in concrete abundance. Not to see them is not to see what is going on.

Yet there is a sharp power gradient here, a cliff of privilege and unacknowledged sheer luck that separates us the pedestrians from they, the dwellers and shelterers.

For street photographers not to tackle this social issue is to foster a blind spot. However, using individuals without their consent, photographically doxxing them is problematic.

I have taken identifiable photos of the homeless before, but it always felt a little dirty. Now I think it makes more sense both aesthetically and morally to anonymise, blur the boundaries, and capture images from a place of we/us.

controversial (?) opinion: alt text should not "explain the joke" or provide additional information that's not apparent in the image itself. latest example i saw is here mastodon.world/@paninid/114888… (and please, i don't intend to shit on this post / user ... it's actually super laudable that they provide alt text). the alt not only describes the image, but then goes on to explain the meme ... but that's not what alt is for #a11y #accessibility

in reply to Pratik Patel

sure, it's a balancing act. but don't explain the actual joke beyond the context (the original post that triggered my musings this morning has now gone ahead and kindly updated the alt to remove the original "This meme humorously compares ..." explanation)

@dj3ei I noticed the original edits when I pulled up the thread. It's definitely a balancing act. There's also the fact that people getting descriptions from AIs don't really think about what's in the description. It's easier to copy and paste without editing. I have specific system prompts I use when I'm looking for photo descriptions for myself. They shorten what AIs give me and remove a lot of extraneous crap.
