New hoodie from a lovely pro-democracy small business on Etsy! I wore it to the grocery store today. Got some weird looks but no harassment. I think the cashier liked it, he was super friendly and chatty with us while checking out.

So is the Admiral with 34 years in the military going to play along with the corruption , lies and murder ?

At #AWSreInvent 2025, #AWS showcased its new frontier #AIagents, including Kiro, AWS Security Agent, and AWS DevOps Agent. These agents are designed to automate #softwaredevelopment, #security, and #operations, respectively. #Kiro autonomously manages coding tasks, the #AWSSecurityAgent proactively identifies and mitigates security risks, and the #AWSDevOps Agent monitors and optimises infrastructure. siliconangle.com/2025/12/02/aw… #tech #media #news

Met a gay couple tonight who are MAGA—racist as fuck—and I know of course that this can happen.

But it actually shocks me when someone’s SO racist they support a regime that also wants to erase them.

in reply to Mats Holberg 🇺🇦 🇵🇸

AND you know they must live in some sort of weird gay MAGA bubble as they seem surprised—when they say critically that an SNL performer clearly hated Trump, as if that were bad—that my instant response was: ‘Well, I hate that racist homophobic motherfucker, too.’

I did choose the adjectives very much on purpose for their edification.

in reply to Mats Holberg 🇺🇦 🇵🇸

It’s always a bit disorienting when you’re more concerned for someone’s rights than they are.
in reply to Mats Holberg 🇺🇦 🇵🇸

I had these exact conversations back in the day with Log Cabin Republican types. They would go on and on about how they were Republicans because they believed in free markets and low taxes and Milton Friedman. And I was just like, you know that to most Republicans you are an abomination, right? A literal abomination in the eyes of God. Your very existence is an offense against everything they believe in. How much of a consolation are low taxes going to be when they decide it's time to clean that up?

But I never got through to them. Nobody wants to believe as much as the Good Ones

@jalefkowit This is a true fact. There’s a misplaced sense of privilege. I feel the same way about Vance’s family. Maybe they feel protected currently. But his wife and children are still—in the opinion of a racist GOP base—brown.
in reply to Mats Holberg 🇺🇦 🇵🇸

@jalefkowit oh do NOT get me started on Log Cabinettes. I still cannot brain why any non-self-loathing gay would be republican much less full-blown MAGA.

But having seen awful racism from white gays, I can.

in reply to Saltysaurus

@david @jalefkowit It’s so hard to wrap my brain around prioritizing your hatred of someone else over your party’s hatred of you!
in reply to Mats Holberg 🇺🇦 🇵🇸

@david It's the Good Ones thing again. The in-group hates me, but they ALSO hate this other person. If I hate the other person extra hard, they'll see I'm one of the Good Ones and accept me.

It's not logical, it's real lizard-brain stuff. But people do it.

in reply to Jason Lefkowitz FINAL (1).DOCX

@jalefkowit That's interesting. I always wondered about the Log Cabin Republicans. I have known one, but I never asked. My guesses were either basic elitism, that they are better than the 'others'; or possibly the 'conservative brain syndrome', that unless something happens to them they don't believe it.
in reply to Mats Holberg 🇺🇦 🇵🇸

I feel the same when I meet a brown-skinned MAGA fan (pretty common around here). Like, buddy, you know you’re at the front of the line, right?

"We think this is a pretty revolutionary development, especially in an era when AI is forcing computer memory prices higher and higher – some sources suggest memory has increased in price by 500%! If we can adapt computer memory demands, both RAM and storage, to sausage-based media, then every deli in America has the opportunity to become a data center! Every sandwich becomes removable storage! Supermarkets full of cold cuts and sausages and charcuterie could be tasked to data storage on demand!"

We need some sort of index to track economic security vs AI implementation. It would be interesting to see what happens as more companies implement AI, how this affects wellbeing of average citizens.
in reply to FeloniousPunk

Not sure if this is the sort of thing that you mean, but seems a start.

@roknrol Hmm that’s good info, but not exactly what I’m looking for. I’d like to see something like:

For every 1 unit of AI implemented, what is the percentage of increase/decrease in quality of life for average human.

If we get to 50 AI Units, if the quality of life drops 25%, that might be a good reason not to implement more AI.

Yeah, yeah, I know. Science and shit. Nobody would listen.

its weird to see so much of the internets 'biological diversity' disappear to 'just use github bro.'

i saw an argument that the public shouldn't even be interacting with mantis. and this is kinda true. issue trackers are not "forums" even though we've ruined the distinction.

Radar revelation stokes fears Caribbean could be drawn into US-Venezuela crisis

cross-posted from: mander.xyz/post/42924622

After being pressed by reporters, Persad-Bissessar admitted on Friday that at least 100 marines were in the country, along with a military-grade radar, believed to be a long-range, high-performance AN/TPS-80 G/ATOR, which the US defence company Northrop Grumman said was used for air surveillance, defence and counter-fire.

The prime minister claimed the radar installation in the country, which is only seven miles away from Venezuela at its closest point, is part of a counter-drug trafficking strategy, and that she had withheld details in the interest of national security and to avoid alerting drug traffickers.

An Astonishing Graph. For most of human history, around 50% of children used to die before they reached the end of puberty. In 2020, that number is 4.3%. (It’s 0.3% in countries like Japan & Norway.) kottke.org/25/12/an-astonishin…

I have an interest in military history. A guerrilla war was fought in the arid Karoo between the British and the settlers. Often the only indication of minor skirmishes are the graves of soldiers in small towns.

In the graveyard of Sutherland lie a mother and her 7 children. The graves are from the early 1900's and none of the children made it past the age of 2. It vividly brought home to me the advances that medicine and baby care has made in the last 100 years.

in reply to kottke.org

You are right, an astonishing graph about how child mortality dropped.

But in the USA they will now reverse the trend. As the article says: child mortality is now such an 'uncommon experience that people have forgotten and want to ban vaccines.'

The USA will see many more children and parents suffering.
