The lengths that conservatives will go to keep young people ignorant of the world is astonishing.

Bottlenecking news & knowledge isn't going to prevent the future these young adults will be facing.

Just like book bans, age verification laws aren't for "safety", they're for control.

These "control the internet" initiatives are intended to destroy privacy as a civil right.

Uncharacteristically participated in an event, volunteering for the local trail race

They gave me a high-viz and a handbell 🤩

There was many people but it was cool. There was 芋煮 at finish !

in reply to YU爺

I didn't volunteer for this event in order to participate in making the 芋煮...

The 芋煮 was in fact very secondary in everyone's mind...

. 2023 Mar: A comparison of the accuracy of mushroom identification applications using digital photographs

" Objective: To compare the accuracy of three popular mushroom identification software applications in identifying mushrooms involved in exposures reported to the Victorian Poisons Information Centre and Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria.

Background: Over the past 10 years, an increasing number of software applications have been developed for use on smart phones and tablet devices to identify mushrooms. We have observed an increase in poisonings after incorrect identification of poisonous species as edible, using these applications...."

"Results: Picture Mushroom was the most accurate of the three apps and correctly identified 49% (95% CI [0-100]) of specimens, compared with Mushroom Identificator (35% [15-56]) and iNaturalist (35% [0-76]). Picture Mushroom correctly identified 44% of poisonous mushrooms [0-95], compared with Mushroom Identificator (30% [1-58]) and iNaturalist (40% [0-84), but Mushroom Identificator identified more specimens of Amanita phalloides correctly (67%), compared to Picture Mushroom (60%) and iNaturalist (27%). Amanita phalloides was falsely identified, twice by Picture Mushroom and once by iNaturalist. "

The benefits of wild mushrooms seems up there with unpasteurized milk. I'll survive being denied that little boon.
in reply to tom jennings

@tomjennings if you learn how to identify a few low risk edible ones, it's quite safe, contrary to random unpasteurized milk.

***lol, it's like "Russian Roulette with mushrooms". 33%, 40%, and 73% chance of ingesting a poisonous Amanita phalloides mushroom if you use one of those apps on an Amanita and it fails (as of the 2023 study). 😬 #mushrooms

Patterns left behind by kelp holdfast on driftwood logs. At Second Beach by La Push, Washington State for today’s King tide. (Patterns are as found — I did not pull kelp off the logs.) #SeaweedSaturday

Soldering.
I'm trying to fix a small LED, battery-pack Christmas light set by cannibalizing a different one. But I can't make any solder "stick" to a metal contact. It's attaching to the wires fine. I've had this issue before.
What is the trick? Different solder? Flux (and how does that work?)?
in reply to Ian M. Mackay, PhD (he/him)

yes flux. You're probably using solder with flux. You may need to just melt a heap onto the terminal (it will roll off) to get enough flux on it for the solder to stick. You can try a fine wire brush or steel wool too.

If it's sitting in a plastic holder you may have trouble getting enough heat into it before melting plasic, Taki it out if you can.

@rasterweb asks:

Tomorrow is the "Santa Rampage" bike ride in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Last year we had over 2,000 people riding (most dressed as Santa!)

Q6. What is the largest group ride you've ever done?

A6. Not the only mass protest on bikes I attended, but this one in 2022 must have been around 10000 cyclists riding over the Autobahn at Frankfurt, Germany. They said it was the longest cycle path ever. To get an impression:

Here's a time-laps recording. (I must have been one dot in the crowd, but am not able to point the right.)

Today: pain. Tomorrow: hopefully less pain. Whatever this junk is, it’s got me feeling like I’ve been kicked in the guts by a mule. Ouch.

New trailer (#1) for soon to be released film on Julian Assange: The Six Billion Dollar Man. The film is an independent, high-stakes documentary tracing WikiLeaks' revelations, the attempts to censor them and the fight that freed Julian Assange. It won the L’Œil d’or at Cannes this year as well as the Golden Globe.
