Bathroom door handle broke. Bought another. Test fit it and it didn't move the lock tongue fully. Lock block was degraded and had too much play, it turned out. Got another of those, after a search coz it's non standard like the rest of the house.
Put that in. Spindle hole now a few mm closer to the edge of the door. Handles don't fit anymore. We had to chisel a chunk out of each side of the door to give the spindle room to turn with the new block.

We just finished. We started at about half three (now nearly half eight here)

I come across this problem so often!

I want to replace MiL's front door mortice lock but the modern version has the key hole 5mm closer to the door edge. I'd have to fill the old hole, move the escutcheon and repaint!

It would be easier to renovate the worn lock internals!
