By the way, I’m not diminishing romance as a literary genre.
Earlier this year, I tried my hand at it. Even completed a first draft. Then I re-read it, and I was like, “No, this is never going to be seen by anyone but myself.”
Romance is formulaic, but the formula is hard to execute.

It is really hard to find a novel that appeals to me. For example, I really like sci-fi. At least, in theory.To find a good sci-fi book I like, I have to:
- Dismiss all books that use sci-fi as a plot device for romance and erotica.
- Dismiss all “hoo-ra” military subgenres
- Read a sample and hope the actual writing is compelling enough
I can’t say this enough. Finding anything good is a tough slog.
