The US was supposedly founded on principles of "freedom" but came up with a diagnosis (drapetomania) for enslaved people who wanted to be free.
Europe has plenty of sins to atone for as well, but I do think that the widespread devastation of WWII led many of its leaders/countries in better directions. The US hasn't had a foreign war fought on our soil for most of our existence; that, plus American exceptionalism, color many of our ideas of "freedom."

@phs I cut the wood to size and divide it 50-50 between eucalyptus and black wattle so that even people who have never made a fire can do it. We get the chimney cleaner in every year.
I always offer to show folks how to build a fire, and I’ve had 2 people take me up on it in 5 years.
