Picked up my wife from company Christmas party at 2 am and was surprised, how rewarding it felt to be able to do it, to know that there is someone, you could get up in the middle of the night for, in order to help them out

Global measures consistently underestimate food insecurity: 1 in 5 who suffer from hunger may go uncounted. Researchers found clear evidence of “bunching” just below the phase 3 threshold, and this effect occurred for multiple countries with different levels of overall food insecurity. byteseu.com/1622955/ #Science

From top AI coding user globally to completely stop using it because it's so much harder to review AI code than write it myself. And they say all software developers jobs will be replaced by LLM. Life comes fast at you. 🤣 xcancel.com/jhleath/status/199…

If you can't review and understand the code generated by the AI you probably shouldn't be allowed to use it.

I want to go to the seaside today. A late start but daylight stretches until after 9pm at this time of year. On my scoot so I may end up *anywhere* 🤣 I tend to wander onto smöl roads. I have extra fuel on board in case I get lost! #motorcycle

The sea. At Low Head. I was too tired to go to the edge, took this photo and came home! #Tasmania

in reply to Douglas

this gets ambient light and the tank light turns on morning and evening, so I can enjoy it lit up when I'm home

I think I would struggle with algae with window light

moss is key

and you have a smaller selection of fish, let me see if I can find a writeup

but you can see I started with a cheap little 10 from Petco and some rinsed pea gravel

I did buy it a nice light but you could do something very similar with a hardware store grow light

in reply to Sara

@sarae wow that's really cute!!

Do you scrape the glass or are snails and/or a pleco enough?

@Sara
in reply to Douglas

the snails do all the work in this one

they came in on some plants and I have to cull them from time to time when they get out of hand

having so many plants and so much gravel is the best control

I wish I'd put more gravel in the 29 when I set that up, when I had another inch or two in it it stayed MUCH cleaner

gravel is magic and also cheap

in reply to Sara

here's some good choices for cold tanks

tho the dojo loaches, while super fun to keep, are invasive in the PNW and illegal in Oregon

in reply to Sara

@sarae We have a aquaponic system in the back where I tried to grow Tilapia, but they couldn't handle the cold and I wasn't willing to heat an outdoor tank ($$$). My (adult) son has a lot of koi, but they keep getting too big for whatever container/tank/pond available and then dying from way too much waste. Need a large pond I think... they get too big.
@Sara
in reply to AI6YR Ben

@ai6yr yeah, I love goldfish but the waste management is a job

koi deserve a small lake, that may be a retirement project for me but I'm not sure how I would keep the eagles from eating them 😆

in reply to Sara

@sarae We once had a bluegill in our pond. For a week. An egret kept on trying to eat it. Finally, a raccoon dived in and ate it. Small lake definitely required, or armoring. (we have metal gridding over the pond at the moment for the koi)
@Sara
in reply to Sara

@sarae @ai6yr
If the water is slack the resulting cat tails might be all the protection the fish need. That's how it went in my parents' pond. Somebody will eventually need to cull the plants so they don't erase the pond, though.
in reply to Weird Socks

@ohmu @ai6yr IDK if they can pull salmon out of the river I feel like cattails aren't really going to show them down 😆

there's a nest just uphill from me, less than 100 yards

this is why I've got exclusively-indoor cats, as does my next door neighbor

in reply to Sara

and this is the video where I learned about the deep gravel thing

youtu.be/rg1u-XVMU3Q?si=hCOy5R…

in reply to Douglas

@sarae I've been looking at rimless tanks maybe in the 10-30 gallon range depending on how ambitions I am feeling.
@Sara
in reply to Douglas

I'm so afraid of chipping those

they're super pretty but I'm kind of klutzy and have 3 cats

So, given WP is willing to sell all its users down the river for some quick "AI" buzz, what fedi-enabled alternatives exist for human-centric websites? therepository.email/wordpress-…

I know of write.as, plume. They're too ascetic to match the brief. ClassicPress could be an option, provided the WP-ActivityPub add-on works with that.

Dan Feidt for Unicorn Riot: What’s the take away from today?

Anthony Maki: I expected escalation [from law enforcement],
but I think they delivered a bit more than my expectations.

Matt McRee: I would agree with that.

Maki: I went out of it after having heard that it was happening through a Signal chat.

I started thinking, “I’m going to go outside and check out what’s happening.”

I woke up Matt.
We started getting ready for about 15 minutes,
and I was prepared for anything to happen,
I guess.

But I didn’t think arrests were very likely

He added that a federal agent shouted at him,
“Fuck you. You’re not even real Minnesotans. You’re all from Canada.”

Oh, we're at THAT part of the poem...
