Queer children less safe in Dutch society, Children’s Ombudsman warns nltimes.nl/2025/12/13/queer-ch…

Yesterday I got the date for the installation of my heat pump system (w/c 19th Jan) and so, after eighteen months of fun minimising my electricity bill with daily Agile pricing, I’m having to think about switching to Octopus’s tariff custom designed for heat pumps. Octopus Cosy provides eight hours of half price power spread over three periods and I’ll initially be programming the system to make the best of that — at least until the solar and battery are installed too.

How this balances up is inevitably going to work out differently between winter and summer, since I’ll have less heating consumption to offset in the summer and the solar will tend to exceed demand through most of the daytime. Winter seems likely to require more experimentation but there are also other tariffs to explore and Octopus staff seem keen to encourage the idea of tariff surfing — switching tariffs half yearly if that helps minimise your costs. What they’re actually doing with that..

..is engineering user behaviour in ways that benefit the grid (and they get paid by the grid operator for the extent to which they shape our demand). They’re operating customers like a virtual power plant. If all that sounds frightfully complex you don’t have to work that way. There are tariffs where you effectively hand control to THEM to optimise the flows of energy. However, as a geek, Ithink I’m going to enjoy what I can learn from manually arbitraging my power import and export.

Thinking about objects today. This is the scoop we use for birdseed. For years it was a toy shovel living in the beach bin in Connecticut, US. Before that, we’d found it 25 years ago on a very remote beach in New Zealand when we were doing fieldwork. It was perfect to keep the toddler occupied with digging. It will likely long outlive us and remain functional, as long as no one throws it into the garbage.
