Does LinkedIn have a gender problem?

After a new algorithm was rolled out earlier this year many women on LinkedIn spotted drops in followers & views of posts... prompting some to pretend to be men, by re-joining using more male language & identifiers; and their profiles regained the levels previously seen as women.

Of course, LinkedIn deny any gender-related shift, but many women on the site see it as yet one more aspect of gender discrimination.

Quite so - it's clear they take an interest. I'm interested in why they take an interest - is it unthinking conformity ("well, that's just what you _do_", almost as if it would be rude not to ask) or if there is an agenda behind it.

My assumption would be that it starts as simply being a norm to collect the data which are then used to shape the behaviour of "the algorithm". That then starts looking like an agenda is at play, whether naturally-arising or otherwise.

@brad

Yes, I'd say that seems a likely path.... LinkedIn is pretty process focussed, as afar as I can tell, rather than having a political axe to grind....

History of Piracy

Hi I'm currently try to learn more about the history of piracy. I know that at some point I saved a very cool plain HTML website regarding that topic that was recommended here but I lost it :/ So now I hope you have cool sources. I'm only into the piracy since a couple of years so everything will be helpful.

warez and IRC is where I started. There used to be IRC channels you could go to and get links to warez sites for stuff or simply share directly via IRC downloading. The people who were in college/university with T1 lines were the kings of that stuff at the time as everyone else was lucky if they were even on a 56k dial-up connection. I pretty much pirated almost every Dreamcast game via IRC OR via forums where people would burn stuff to a disc for you and then physically mail the discs to your house. I had a buddy that was in college half way across the country that would do this. download a bunch of stuff via his T1 line, burn the stuff to a bunch of CD-Rs and then mail them to my house, I remember that's how I got Windows 2000.

It started way before that.

People copying books and sheet music. If you're talking electronic, then I have "pirated" reel to reel music copied from records from the 60's.

If you're talking computers, I have floppy discs copied and passed around from the 80's.

BBS's existed in the 70's and were sharing stuff before IRC became popular.

Heck, if humans can technically make a copy of it, no matter how difficult, we will and freely share it.

thats sounds so cool an in a way also very inconvenient

💡 Tip: I open browser tabs to get myself to do unpleasant/boring tasks.

E.g. I need to contact customer service, I’ll open a tab with the company’s website.

Why it works:

Opening a tab is too small a task to procrastinate on, yet it feels like you’ve started, so progress becomes easier.

It’s also harder to get distracted because it’s right there, all day.

And getting the tab out the f*ing way is motivating in itself.

It’s not a silver bullet, but it works well!

Who else does this?

A person I'm in touch with in #Gaza has her GoFundMe frozen (although they're still happy to take money from me on her behalf). The way we're currently able to support people in Gaza is chaotic and unsystematic, but it's the best I feel we've currently got.

How easy would it be for those of you in Gaza who are in need of help to organise a co-operative on the ground to support one another? Are things just too chaotic, and is moving around still too dangerous?

we are freezing. My children have caught a cold. Our tent is flooded. Please donate to me. I want to build a shelter that will withstand the winter. Don't leave me and my children alone. Your donations will save us from the bitter cold of winter.🙏😭

Pfiou ! Quelle opiniâtreté !
Mon tableau est moins abouti :
Fb : fini
Insta : jamais eu

Grrr
