maybe someone i know is interested in heading cOAlitionS. The strategy 2026-2030 is not great though

also note: "Remuneration will be commensurate to the experience and credentials of the candidate" – such ambiguity leads to inequity πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

Kev mentioned that our oil change was scheduled for January 8th and I was like "Oh, on Elvis' birthday" and he was like "Why do you know his birthday? You don’t even like Elvis."

He is correct because I am very indifferent to Elvis and I seriously have no idea why I know his dumb birthday when I have to write all of my friends' and family member's birthdays on a physical paper calendar old lady style.

My mind is full of useless BS like this and I think it's clogging the space I should be using for important things, like singing the periodic table backwards since I currently can only sing it forward.

So He can look at Himself while walking to remember who He is.

Got my rpi4 now booted with usb disk and not SD-card. Have HAOS installed and now the big challenge to get the 1-wire GPIO interface based on a DS2482-100 to be found so I can connect my quite large network.

Somehow I’ve been lead into HACS and installed that and onewire_sysbus. Not finished yet so I’m not sure if this will work. Need to mount the disk on a Linux host to edit the /boot configuration.

If that works then I’m really good to go as I have tested the other integrations to work.

There's an addon that lets you SSH into your HAOS install

Advanced SSH & Web Terminal

Maybe that'll let you avoid having to mount the disk on a linux box

Self-hosting does not make your data safe.

If you don't put in place, review, *and test* backup and recovery plans,,and security measures appropriate to the risk, your data are not "safe".

Your data might be less affected by the whims of third parties, which can be valuable for sure, but don't confuse that with your data being "safe".

And I say this as someone who loves self-hosting.

Any "beginners' guide to self-hosting" which doesn't lead with, or at least focus on, security and resiliency, is getting it wrong, IMHO.

regular backups to three different cloud services for me. I've lost so many things before that I learnt the hard way.

I pay a hosting company to "self host". It's expensive, but I get resilience and I can run a cron to automatically request a backup be sent to my Google Drive every evening. I've checked the backups and they are good.
