I hope to take part in more Writer's Union events in 2026. To start with, an evening where we'll write New Years' greetings to imprisoned writers overseas.

I'm considering walking to work, at least some days, it would take like an hour and fifteen minutes each way, but still...

I used to do it out of bus based necessity, but now post-car I kind of just want to put on an audiobook and walk.

in reply to seasonal handle 🎏

The place I used to work was 11 miles (~17km) south of where I live. I've done that walk a few times, never want to do that again. Took about 3hrs15min. Not to mention mountainous terrain.

17km is about how far I used to have to bike to school, which was totally doable, but absolutely no fun when, say, a tire told me to go fuck myself and I had to walk most of it home.
in reply to Alex Daily!

@Alexis Oh man, I can imagine. Also, the quickest, most direct path home was alongside the highway 99% of the way home.
in reply to Rand al'Thor 🏳‍🌈

@rand__althor That part of walking or biking in America sounds terrifying to me. I at least had bike paths 95% of the way to school. (And a culture that doesn't see cyclists/pedestrians as fun impromptu target practice.)
in reply to Alex Daily!

It might be easier to walk into Mordor than to navigate America as a pedestrian.
in reply to seasonal handle 🎏

*considers* Given his walking across America experience, Forrest Gump could probably walk into Mordor no problem.
in reply to Alex Daily!

Hmmm. But would he be able to cast the ring into the fires of Mt. Doom?
in reply to seasonal handle 🎏

He'd forget it at home, go back to get it, walk into Mordor a second time, and then just drop it in.
in reply to Alex Daily!

Anyway, have you considered cycling to work instead of walking?
in reply to Alex Daily!

I used to do this, but I just feel like walking, it's just the time I'm unsure about.

Former U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris will visit Jackson, Mississippi, for a stop on her book tour early next year.

Her book, “107 Days,” recounts her whirlwind presidential campaign after former President Joe Biden withdrew from the 2024 campaign.

I'm snug in my blanket with my hot cocoa while the temperature drops and snow sifts down from the sky... and planning for my demise.

(writers, so dramatic)

This is my semi-regular PSA to write a Final Letter to your heirs that will make it easier to sort your affairs once you're gone (and update it regularly).

in reply to Steve Moore

@ArrowbearMoore yes! Excellent list This is what's in my Final Letter (+ all the info about my literary estate).

Dashlane or any master password keeper is *essential*.

As is revisiting all this regularly.

I've started labeling my contacts as "friend" and "cat babysitter" just because when my mom passed and I was going through her phone, wondering who to contact to let them know, she had labels like that and it was so helpful!

Going tomorrow to the lawyer's to sign the updated will/trust!

in reply to Sue is Writing Solarpunk 🌞🌱

@ArrowbearMoore

I will add that every year I revise the Final Letter and it evolves... it's complicated to catch all the small things and to keep them updated, but the time you put into that is genuinely grief you will save your loved ones.

I've had 4 parents pass and the one who left without a will really made things much more difficult.

really tired of the constant attempts at manipulation — by AI, by tech corps, by the fascists, by propaganda, the media, the algos, advertising, all the malevolent forces in the world
