"A dominant core of 147 firms through interlocking stakes in others together control 40% of the wealth in the global network according to the Swiss Institute of Technology. A total of 737 companies control 80% of it all."

... and this concentration of wealth enables the increasing control of media and political power.

But I think the left's political analysis is still behind this curve. Capitalism has effectively fractured into an increasing number of very small businesses and a declining number of increasingly enormous multinationals - that degrade and exploit the small businesses just as they do their workers and customers.

The left has missed, I think, that focusing on this division, and the identity of interests between workers, customers and small business, as opposed to big business, could create a new, powerful electoral alliance, in favour of free enterprise and markets, but against the accumulation of enormous wealth and power in relatively few private hands.

Thank you for the link, what a gift!

A remarkable piece, in a remarkable performance. Very moving.

I was moved to look for biographical background. Britten wrote the piece in 1942, in times as fragile as ours. He and Peter Pears returned from the US to England, on a Swedish cargo ship. German U-boats were active on the Atlantic, so this was no holiday trip. On a stop in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Britten had picked up a book of medieval poems, which during the voyage he turned into this extended piece.

From the medieval text: Christ's coming is "to rifle satans fold - all hell doth at his presence quake." Apt for these fraught times (his and ours).

@the_roamer I am in now way able to understand fully the meanings of what I hear in music. But this is a wonderful addition to my recent few hours after diner for music. Together with Dorothy Howell 's "Koong Shee " and Arthur Bliss "The Shepherds Holiday¨. While Vaughan Williams is never far away too.
