It's still #caturday where I am, so here's a throwback pic to the day I adopted Misha and Henry. They now both weigh in at around 17 pounds, but they're still just as adorable as they were when the nice foster lady took this picture of us.
For those of you wondering about stablecoins, John Naughton (Observer, but no paywall for this article) sets out a summary of the political economy of their development, drawing a parallel with the petro-dollar move that cemented the place of the dollar as the world's reserve currency.
Of course currently there are many aspirant stablecoins, but as he points out, given the tech sector trends to monopoly, at some point a dominant stablecoin will be clear.

You avoided people 397 times this year (but to be fair December isn't over yet).
You relived an embarrassing moment from 30 years ago 6 times.
You forgot 13 people's names, or maybe 14, who knows?
You attended 1 parties this year, and left early for 1 of them.
It's been 76 seconds since you checked your phone.
15 people are looking at you RIGHT NOW.

in reply to Emeritus Prof Christopher May • • •An interesting read, but I find the conclusion unconvincing. The clear analogue to oil is electricity, not GPUs.
And even if it were GPUs, Taiwan leads on chip fabrication, not the US.
But, in the digital era, I think judicial certainty and consistency of policy is more likely to be a deciding factor for international business transactions.
In a transaction between two non-US actors, given a choice, who in their right mind would choose to loop the US into that transaction now?
