None of the forecast persistent rain has materialised at Dundonald yet.

It’s unusual for a forecast to be that wrong. It could be raining heavily in other areas of course.

A dog is lying on a brick patio in sunlight. The dog has a white coat with large black patches, primarily on its back and head. Its legs are extended outward, revealing spotted markings on its paws and lower legs. The dog is positioned near a concrete curb, and there is some green vegetation visible in the corners of the image. The patio is made up of gray rectangular bricks laid in a herringbone pattern.

Thursday, the EU launched a European Digital Infrastructure Consortium for Digital Commons. During this launch, EU & national authorities were *crystal clear* on how large our digital autonomy challenges are in the Trump era. I delivered a keynote in which I outlined how dependent we are technically and culturally on US big tech, and I offered some modest advice: berthub.eu/articles/posts/keyn…

Thank you again for being there, we all enjoyed your speech! I'm glad that you found it encouraging.

Btw this part made me chuckle 😂:
"But this escalation continued. So I went to the Dutch king, and I told him it was no good. And you can tell he’s the king, because all of us have a nametag. But he doesn’t. He’s the king."

@Gina very happy to have been there and honored that I got to speak as well!

There are no superior beings.

That's the thought stuck in my head for a while now. This very simple position has interesting, and so far only wholesome consequences.

I think I might as well make it a rule to live by and see what happens 🙂

Thought experiments welcome.

in reply to Badgardener

@Badgardener in my mind the principle is symmetric. So no: I'm not superior to the worm in my garden for example.

If through my clumsiness I accidentally kill a worm, it's normal to feel shame and mourn it. Interesting consequence, but I don't see any harm in it.

I'm not going to be carrying a broom yet, because I'm imperfect 🙂

Recovery is three steps forward and two steps back, which is deeply frustrating. It took me two attempts to sit up in bed this morning. (I'm not quite as bad as that once I do get vertical, but the initial push is always difficult at the moment.)

Ah well. It could be worse. At least I'm not in hospital!

in reply to Baroque Mongoose

I remember when I was recovering from my MI, not the same I appreciate, but sometimes it does seem to take forever to recover! You will get there & I for one, at least, will be here cheering you on! 🤗

UK folks, do you expect to get paid early in December?

  • yes (50%, 10 votes)
  • no (50%, 10 votes)
20 voters. Poll end: 1 week ago

in reply to coldclimate

I voted 'yes' not because I 'expect' it, but because work offered it and I don't doubt that it will happen.

Payday would land on Christmas day, and has been brought forward to the 19th, but staff were also offered an earlier payday if it were needed.

I am fine with the 19th, and I don't know if any other staff took up the offer of an earlier payday.

I've been using Firefox for literally two decades at this point, but I think now might be time to move on and try something new for a while.

Vivaldi is okay, but I still really like the ideas behind Qutebrowser.

in reply to Brandon

I tried this a few weeks ago and ended up back in FF after a couple days. It's the muscle memory, I think.

By 2047, India could be staring at more than 11 million tonnes of discarded solar panels.

"India has not yet developed a complete ecosystem or strong, incentive-based policy framework for the recycling industry. This gap becomes even more evident when we look at sectors like solar energy," said Sandeep Tiwari, founder of Waste is Gold Technologies, an organisation treating and disposing of all kinds of waste."

I think we need to SAY, This seems bad, but so much better than fossil fuel waste.
Am I being too pedantic / obvious?
in reply to bewilderbeast23

@bewilderbeast23 There is no Green Transition. That's energy industry propaganda. We have solar waste and fossil fuel waste. We have a global oil, gas and coal boom right now. We're having the exact conversation the energy industry wants us to have: comparing energy sources. The conversation we should be having is how to we massively reduce energy and material consumption.

We think we have an energy production problem.

But what we really have is an energy consumption problem.

in reply to sebsauvage

@sebsauvage Oui cette recommandation m'a aussi surpris. L'argument "Apple vaut mieux que les autres parce qu'ils font de l'argent avec leur hardware" était plus ou moins valide il y a 15 ans mais plus vraiment aujourd'hui

switching back to pencils, this is an exercise in which I copy one of John Singer Sargent's sketches to learn from the process. my copy is quite far off model. I spent not enough time composing, I started rendering top down like a printer instead of plotting proportions, spent too much time trying to copy line for line and match tones and not enough time on observation and switching.

this has doubled as an exercise in humility. for my next such exercise I will re-introduce envelope technique.

in reply to millennial fulcrum

Wow, that touches me now. I look at your drawings and am simply amazed, wishing I could do the same.

When I read your thoughts on your approach to sketching, I saw that we artists have something in common: our (sometimes overly harsh) self-criticism and our desire to get the best out of ourselves. Making mistakes, learning. It's good to know that others feel the same way. 🤗

And that encourages me to keep honing my drawing skills. 😊
