New computer chair just arrived so off to spend an hour putting it together.

in reply to Mike 🇬🇧 🇪🇺

@MikeFromLFE @afewbugs @Nickiquote @essjayjay Personally I love reading about characters in historical fiction (or documentaries) who manage to be themselves without ever being out - so to speak.

I keep circling around the current media landscape (social, cultural, music/movies/literature) and I've wound up with an idea I can't execute on, but I want out in the world so maybe someone else can try it.
These are the core ideas motivating me:
1) We can't trust "big tech" cloud services. "The cloud" is just "other people's computers" and we cannot trust those other people with our shared music/movies/books or even our documents (think Google Drive or Dropbox).
in reply to Parker Morse

But also 2) it's not reasonable for everyone to self-host. Just because Jellyfin, Synology Drive, etc. etc. *exist* and can be run on a home server doesn't mean everyone can (or should) run a home server.
So, what's in between?
If we think in terms of "local community" services, I think the answer is libraries.
in reply to Parker Morse

Libraries already provide a lot of media streaming services (think Overdrive/Libby, Hoopla, Kanopy), so a step to self-hosting would not be a big step. We know that, for example, Overdrive's private-equity owners represent a threat to our public libraries as they currently exist. But libraries are already - through the spreading concept of the "Library of Things" - facilitating community ownership of tools that are impractical for every individual household to own.

Serious question...

When do the users get a say in how we want our experience?

I'm fucking tired of companies trying to tell me "we're doing this for you" when most people I know nowadays respond with "Thanks I hate it"

#WordWeavers 12/14 Are your characters incapacitated by injuries, or do they brush them off as flesh wounds?

It depends.

I made my Wolves heal fast, and mostly, they can brush off injuries but not always.

My Winds & Pillars don't get hurt often, and there are healers, but sometimes, they need time to recover.

Crash certainly doesn't brush off injuries. Krighen needs time to recover.

I do try to make my stories realistic for the world they are set in.

None of the forecast persistent rain has materialised at Dundonald yet.

It’s unusual for a forecast to be that wrong. It could be raining heavily in other areas of course.

A dog is lying on a brick patio in sunlight. The dog has a white coat with large black patches, primarily on its back and head. Its legs are extended outward, revealing spotted markings on its paws and lower legs. The dog is positioned near a concrete curb, and there is some green vegetation visible in the corners of the image. The patio is made up of gray rectangular bricks laid in a herringbone pattern.

Thursday, the EU launched a European Digital Infrastructure Consortium for Digital Commons. During this launch, EU & national authorities were *crystal clear* on how large our digital autonomy challenges are in the Trump era. I delivered a keynote in which I outlined how dependent we are technically and culturally on US big tech, and I offered some modest advice: berthub.eu/articles/posts/keyn…

Thank you again for being there, we all enjoyed your speech! I'm glad that you found it encouraging.

Btw this part made me chuckle 😂:
"But this escalation continued. So I went to the Dutch king, and I told him it was no good. And you can tell he’s the king, because all of us have a nametag. But he doesn’t. He’s the king."
