#WritersCoffeeClub 12/14 Share how you tackle a first round of revisions.

I edit as I write, by reading back what I wrote before moving to the next scene. So the "first round" practically happens as I write.

"Editing" means that the first time around I slowly read through the story and fix passages that are awkward, unclear or simply bad. I clean out repetitions. I eliminate typos.

However, I do not rewrite.

Maybe that's what you meant.

Pressure grows on Ireland’s squeezed middle – The Irish Times byteseu.com/1626611/ #economy #HousingCrisis #HousingDemand #Ireland #ItSunday

Yeah, I'm off social media for the night as well. This is tragic, and no amount of speculation is going to help; indeed, it may well cause innocent people to be hurt.

Please, if you have "theories", keep them to yourself until the _facts_ are known.

“Imperialism and racism are central to the capitalist world economy. The barbarism is a feature, not a bug. Imperialism is not a side-gig, not an over-reach committed by greedy individuals, it is a structural feature of the capitalist world economy."

give them the thoughtful present of a brick for christmas. to deliver it, if the car does not feature a chimney, send it in through the windshield.

for additional charm write a festive message and adhere it to the gift.

something nice like "keep the change ya filthy animals x"

in reply to Sue Briccay

@essjayjay I saw a house the other day with the nameplate “Pampas Cottage”.
in reply to Nick

@Nickiquote @essjayjay I've always wondered how the pampas grass thing was supposed to work. Like, you're horny so you plant pampas grass but then you have to wait two years for it to grow big enough for other swingers to notice
in reply to Jules

@afewbugs @essjayjay Either it’s all nonsense or garden centres are making a fortune selling horny swingers mature pampas.
in reply to Nick

@afewbugs @essjayjay Lots of swingers turning up in peephole bras and edible underpants one Saturday night only to be told that when they planted it, they hoped it would add some spark to the marriage, but now the divorce has gone through and the ex-wife lives with a chartered accountant in Brentford.

@afewbugs @essjayjay “Oh the pampas grass? That was Dave’s idea, before the fishing accident.”
in reply to Nick

@Nickiquote @afewbugs @essjayjay WTHeck!! I only know about upside down pineapples. When did pampas grass become a thing?
in reply to Benf

@feritae @afewbugs @essjayjay Wikipedia says this but I’m sure I’d heard about it years before. I think it’s a longstanding urban myth, probably perpetuated by neighbours who disliked the plant.
in reply to Nick

@Nickiquote @feritae @afewbugs @essjayjay

Our last neighbours had a huge patch of the old pampas that encroached upon our garden and me and Trish were constantly having to service passers by. It got very tiresome. When it disturbed the Bake Off final I insisted they cut it back.

in reply to Nick

@Nickiquote

Maybe that's part of the swinging scene.
Mature pampas grass plants are thrown into a giant tub in the garden and people who don't have any pick out random ones to take home ... 🤷‍♀️

Or something. :blobcatthinking:

@afewbugs @TheBreadmonkey

in reply to Jules

My parents had a big pampus grass in the front garden and every year they'd divide it up like rhubarb and give bits of it away to other peop..... hang on a fucking minute.

@MikeFromLFE @afewbugs @Nickiquote @essjayjay Personally I love reading about characters in historical fiction (or documentaries) who manage to be themselves without ever being out - so to speak.
in reply to Mel

@missmelanieh @MikeFromLFE @Nickiquote @essjayjay the potential for mistakes in the hankie code also confuses me, particularly under dim bar or club lighting. Like yellow vs gold, watersports vs looking for a threesome. You wouldn't want to get those confused

I keep circling around the current media landscape (social, cultural, music/movies/literature) and I've wound up with an idea I can't execute on, but I want out in the world so maybe someone else can try it.
These are the core ideas motivating me:
1) We can't trust "big tech" cloud services. "The cloud" is just "other people's computers" and we cannot trust those other people with our shared music/movies/books or even our documents (think Google Drive or Dropbox).
in reply to Parker Morse

But also 2) it's not reasonable for everyone to self-host. Just because Jellyfin, Synology Drive, etc. etc. *exist* and can be run on a home server doesn't mean everyone can (or should) run a home server.
So, what's in between?
If we think in terms of "local community" services, I think the answer is libraries.
in reply to Parker Morse

Libraries already provide a lot of media streaming services (think Overdrive/Libby, Hoopla, Kanopy), so a step to self-hosting would not be a big step. We know that, for example, Overdrive's private-equity owners represent a threat to our public libraries as they currently exist. But libraries are already - through the spreading concept of the "Library of Things" - facilitating community ownership of tools that are impractical for every individual household to own.

Serious question...

When do the users get a say in how we want our experience?

I'm fucking tired of companies trying to tell me "we're doing this for you" when most people I know nowadays respond with "Thanks I hate it"

users get a say in user experience when it is not for profit.

#WordWeavers 12/14 Are your characters incapacitated by injuries, or do they brush them off as flesh wounds?

It depends.

I made my Wolves heal fast, and mostly, they can brush off injuries but not always.

My Winds & Pillars don't get hurt often, and there are healers, but sometimes, they need time to recover.

Crash certainly doesn't brush off injuries. Krighen needs time to recover.

I do try to make my stories realistic for the world they are set in.
