Are asylum seekers really responsible for a violent crime epidemic in the UK?
As claims spread suggesting men from certain backgrounds have a propensity to commit certain crimes, here’s why the statistics fail to provide the full pictureHaroon Siddique (The Guardian)

14th December
Listening to the stillness
Of a rain-washed morning
A thread of silver
in the southeastern sky
A brightening gap,
where the light gets in
And the day begins
With a beautiful smile
And the gentle call
Of a bright green yaffle
High in the sycamore
Laughing
The broken barn
Is nearly mended
And the owl-light is soft
In the drizzle
A she-Merlin flickers
Like a bright-lit candle
Over the red moss
Away to the hill
Flies she

I've been extremely exhausted this whole last week. And I was super mad at my body this one evening, where I did the reasonable thing and went to bed at 21:30, because I could hardly keep my eyes open anymore... and I just couldn't fall asleep for two hours. 😭

#Introduction - A new home for longer mountain ramblings & tech dabbling!
After years on a managed Mastodon instance, I've finally jumped into the #selfhosted world! Say hello to my new personal #ActivityPub instance, powered by #GoToSocial from home.
While I test the waters here (and learn all the complexities of managing self-hosting!), this space will be for the longer-form, deeper-dive content:
1. Extended mountain trip reports with more photos.
2. Ramblings on my rather amateur adventures in #technology, #landscapephotography, #lora mesh networks, #degoogling efforts, and #linuxphone solutions.
Think of it as my digital base camp. If you're a mountain person who loves tech (or a tech person who loves mountains), we probably have things in common. Boosts and introductions are welcome!

its running on a 2017 barebones mini-pc with 2GB ram and 64GB ssd. I have problems setting up reverse proxy here due to router complications so am using Cloudflare tunnel to serve the internet. Backup done by a Borgmatic script. I'm no expert but so far so good.
Really good feeling to know that its your own server in your own home. I only thought about doing this because my managed hosting provider is going out of business.
I do like gotosocial though, like their approach and that small scale approach is perfect for 1/2 person social media
hm I just thought about upstream speed but just serving a couple of photos and then just text shouldn't kill any line
Irish Times: An insightful column from Roe here with some well written bits:
"No party or politician attacking trans people has ever meaningfully protected women’s rights outside the narrow, hostile frame they use to justify disempowering trans people"
#Ireland #Trans #Transrights #IE #IEPol
🧵More from this: "And we need to recognise that the rise in hostility toward trans people in Ireland, the UK and the US is not organic, it is co-ordinated. Many of the most aggressive narratives now circulating here originate abroad, pushed by groups with no real stake in Irish society or wellbeing, but aiming to stoke fear and division. Trans people are targeted not because they pose a threat, but because they are an effective tool for conservative and far-right groups: undermining trans rights upholds patriarchal power, and persuading society to accept the oppression of one marginalised group makes it easier to stall equality...
Women who identify as feminists but hold anti-trans views (a contradiction in terms in my opinion) should consider how patriarchy thrives when women are politically divided. The fixation of conservative politicians on trans people is deliberate – a way to stoke fear and fracture solidarity in ways that ultimately harm all women, as well as queer and trans people"
