NVIDIA wouldn't be where they are if SGI handn't laid off the entire PC division that becqme 3dfx. Then later handing off the last of the gfx hardware designers - free, once the single chip Octane gfx chip was completed. Along with the engineers working on high bandwidth interconnect (infiniband), moving gfx data.

Luck, right place, right time, and enough resources to do something with it.
