in reply to Moof! • • •There are a number of Talgo staff wearing “Der neue ICE L” hoodies in Talgo purple that are walking around and fiddling with the technical equipment. It seems there are still some teething issues. There also seem to be a number of DB Corporate types here.
Others on Fedi are complaining about the noise in here, but it seems to be related to the Air Conditioning, which suddenly turned off and made it much quieter in here…
Also, there is a weird hissing sound which may be something to do with braking, or with the carriage door closing. I'll see if I can work out what it is in a bit.

One of the major reasons is that it fills a big gap in the ICE network, that currently only IC trains can fill - unelectrified lines.
These new Talgo 230 trains are in what's known as a “Push-Pull" configuration, where a separate locomotive is coupled to one end of the train, and a control car is fixed on the other end of the train. The train can then be driven from either end.
This does mean that you can also replace the locomotive at your convenience, as you can just decouple one locomotive and attach another one.
There are a number of IC lines on the edges of the German network which have not yet been electrified, and the IC loco-hauled trains can and do swap locomotives when the electrification ends.
The ICE L’s next line after Köln-Berlin is going to be Hamburg-Westerland(Sylt), which is one of these lines. This will be starting in May 2026.

in reply to Moof! • • •But the ICE L is not just a fancy IC. It's a complete service upgrade for these lines. Much like the
ICE 4, the concept changes completely, from something that takes you from A to B sorta efficiently, to a form of travel that is more comfortable and more enjoyable. It also allows you to go at higher speeds as you get to to the core of the network.
Yes, it maxes out at 230 km/h - but that's good enough for most of the routes it's designed for, and is generally a speed improvement over the current 160 or 200 km/h limit that these ICs currently have.
ICE is not just about high speed. It's mostly about a feel to the train, a type of service, and a commitment to giving an enjoyable experience to travellers.
On a lot of these lines, people use cars because it's a nicer and more convenient experience than existing trains. How better to convince them to take the more eco-friendly option than to make it more enjoyable, something people want to travel on?
