Trump's apparent willingness to stay involved in Venezuela and his intensifying rhetoric about expanding U.S. power elsewhere in the hemisphere are making some of his die-hard supporters nervous.
Not all of them are reaching for the popcorn yet.

Anyone remember the West Wing episode when Sam Seaborn gets convinced we should flip the map so that South is on the top? Classic.

December 11, 2023 – Making fun of Tailwind AND React in a single cartoon? Count me in! This is a version of a cartoon I did long ago when I drew at the college newspaper, poking fun at the school's quarterback tendency to choke or get injured in the key games. Back then, my editor chose not to publish it, which was probably the best decision considering how serious Texans are about football.
JR East, Seibu, and TX also face a wave of transportation fare hikes: Yamanote Line Tokyo-Shinjuku fare to rise from 210 yen to 260 yen
The wave of price hikes is not just affecting food, but also transportation. JR East has implemented the first full-scale price hike since privatization inBYTESEU (Bytes Europe)

in reply to King of Tors • • •I don't remember a West Wing episode but growing up (or maybe college?) I had a map of the Americas with the south on top.
The Mercator projection overuse puzzles me to be honest, when there are so many good equal area projections.

in reply to soaproot • • •@soaproot I don't remember your map of the Americas with south on top, but that doesn't mean you didn't have it growing up.
The West Wing episode features "The Organization of Cartographers for Social Equality" lobbying the White House to abandon the Mercator projection. It's one of many episodes in the first season where Sam (played by Rob Lowe) is told to go sit in a room with someone-or-other whom no one else wants to deal with, then Sam gets convinced they have a point, and tries to take it up the ladder only to be told, in this case, we're not changing the map. Some read that character as comic relief but to me, he was the Pu, the "un-carved block," of Taoism. I haven't done much reading on Taoist teachings, but there was this amazing book _The Tao of Pooh_ (yes, as in "Winnie the") which we read in a class I took Freshman year called "The Philosophy of Aesthetics."
Anyway, I think the best explanation for the Mercator projection still being in such wide use is inertia. Or, if you'd rather, "because."
