So here's a problem I have with books about older female protagonists. Somehow, in these books, thirty five is when you start getting grey hair and changing metabolism? I must have missed that memo, because I didn't start showing grey until mid forties. I'm 53 now and still not entirely grey. It feels a little insulting. One book even proposed a woman in perimenopause in her 30s. Which, okay, sure it happens, but I think that's a bit of an outlier...

I dunno. Maybe I'm just prickly at 53. Does anyone else have opinions on this?

Yes. If a character is in perimenopause in her 30s, it needs to be >recognised in the text< that she is an outlier.

I do also want to recognize that the level of collective anger and organizing happening in the US right now to protect their neighbours is admirable. I'm sure we're not even hearing most of it.

I hope we Canadians can also do that too when the time comes for us to fight back.

It's sincerely very cool that the Dropkick Murphys are the way they are

that's a band that probably really did alienate a pretty big portion of their fanbase, and I have a ton of respect for them

The environmental movement must also be a labor movement.

The labor movement must also be an environmental movement.

There is no other way to stop the dual exploitation of workers and the planet that now threatens the survival of society itself.

in reply to J Lou

@jlou
The environmental movement is a holistic movement which produces detailed, coherent plans.

The short summary of principles is 20 pages long after its third major revision. It says things like:

Acknowledging that injustice, racism, poverty, ignorance, corruption, crime and violence, armed conflict and the search for maximum short term profit are causing widespread human suffering

Environmentalism is the philosophy which unifies all the problems.

@ensslen
My purpose was to build on the idea that environmentalism goes together with labor rights philosophically by pointing out a philosophical connection between the two movements.

I disagree with pro-conservation aspects in that article. Our orientation towards nature should be motivated by reducing wild animal suffering. Ecosystems are complex so any interventions we make must be carefully studied. These interventions might involve allowing some species to go extinct

Today I learned: there's a 1774 legal case about copyright before the House of Lords that includes in a brief a special insert explaining to the Lords how printing works by way of defending their position. id.lib.harvard.edu/alma/990018…

Thought the sky looked nice at dusk. Took a walk outside to get a good view of north Manhattan. Big mistake. Very cold and windy
in reply to healyn

The bridge in this picture is officially called the "RFK Bridge". Anyone from this area calls it the "Triborough Bridge" (if you're heading over it from Queens, you can decide to go to either Manhattan or the Bronx, hence three boroughs)

By the time this presidential administration ends, and it will, the Kennedy name will be removed imo

A lot of people don't wanna hear this, but the guy deserved a Nobel Prize just for ending the War on Protein...

We're taking a stand, uncovering how fascist policies are reshaping the coffee world and beyond, and what you can do to change the course of history for the better.

NB, posting this here in the fediverse will most likely result in the MastoDDos effect on our website, meaning it can be "down" for as much as 5 minutes or longer as 1000s of fediverse servers hammer our website in milliseconds. But this post is very much worth it.
