"For the past week [Trump] has been telling a story about a residential building in Colorado taken over by a gang from Venezuela. But it appears the story is entirely made up. Similarly, Trump on Friday said at a right-wing Moms for Liberty event that public schools in America kidnap children and operate on them to change their sex."

"This is bonkers, but it is bonkers in a way that deliberately demonizes Trump’s opponents. ….

That bleak version of the United States, it turns out, echoes the talking points Russian handlers gave to their operatives working in the U.S. in an effort 'to steer the U.S. public opinion in the right direction.'”

Richardson then discusses the sanctions and criminal charges announced yesterday the DOJ, State Department, and Treasury against employees of Russian-owned and -controlled RT who have been funding a company in the US that is clearly Tenet Media in Tennessee to influence the outcome of the 2024 election.

"The Russians directed their U.S. employees to emphasize the following 'campaign topics':

"The DOJ alleges that the American influencers were paid starting in November 2023 and have posted 2000 videos with over '16 million views'. What was most amazing is the amounts of money Russia put into this project. Traditionally the old KGB and FSB were incredibly stingy organizations but the $10 million they invested was distributed to just five people. You will choke at the amounts."

"The DoJ alleges that the commentators were likely duped by the two Russian assets, but the material, orders and money should have made anyone suspicious. ...

Despite being duped, the denials ring flat when the amounts of money and the literal parroting of Moscow’s daily tasking is considered. No amount of coincidence in the world could account for that."

(That’s right, 90 PERCENT of the money for this hot new upstart right-wing media company came from Russian shell companies. Oh, did you think they were funded by the grassroots?)"

Yesterday, one day short of 60 days before the November election, the US government did four things:

"• Indicted two RT officials, Konstantin Kalashnikov and Elena Mikhaylovna Afanasyeva, and in the process exposed some right wing influencers to be useful idiots paid indirectly by RT.

• Unsealed the domain takedown affidavit for a bunch of sites used in a Russian fake news program, Doppelgänger."

@inthehands

My tiny country Bulgaria was subjected to over 300 million of US propaganda and espionage money just last year. (Only the VoA website team got 143 millions). US embassy in Sofia is of a size of entire quarter, and no government could do its job without the approval of US.

How this compares to the 10 millions that Russia spent in US?

Armenia and Georgia are subjected to even worse cases of US influence than Bulgaria.

in reply to Georg Tuparev

@tuparev @inthehands I see. Russia and what it's doing are all good, then. Since that's the case — in your mind, evidently — I wonder why Europe just doesn't turn to Russia as its great savior?
in reply to William Lindsey

@inthehands

That's exactly the problem with the neolibs!

You think, that you are riding on a white horse of moral values and everyone else is in a jungle of misery. Count the body bags your morals created and compare them with the jungle!

BTW, if you bothered to exam my CV (you did not) you might learn, that I did escape the communism and for many years was prominent member of different EU green parties. I just dislike the western arrogance.

in reply to Georg Tuparev

@tuparev @inthehands I'm afraid you're quite badly mistaken if you imagine I support neoliberalism. And you can dress up Putin's propaganda any way you choose to do so, and many of us will still see the pig under the lipstick.
in reply to Georg Tuparev

@tuparev @inthehands When people come here to sling around personal insults, I stop playing. I've done you the courtesy of replying, as I almost always do to those who address me directly here. But that's it: no more from me. I don't have time and energy to play those dysfunctional games on social media. Thanks for understanding.

We have raised almost £15,000 in our campaign to fund our menopause exhibition when arts and heritage funders will not. Will you join more than 300 people in creating the cultural space around menopause that's been missing for millennia? gofundme.com/f/r9tszw
in reply to Vagina Museum

Throughout history, menopause has been almost completely invisible. In the 19th century, we saw a shift in paradigm. Suddenly people were talking about it - and those people were doctors. It began to emerge as a problem which could be solved with the right medicine.

We could even tell you the name of the man who invented the word "menopause", where previously there had been no name for the common life event (Charles-Pierre-Louis de Gardanne, a student doctor in 1821).

in reply to Vagina Museum

Things are starting to change. Celebrities are speaking out. Brands are jumping on the bandwagon. But where's menopause in the cultural sphere? Where's the art and the literature? Menopause: What's Changed will bring together the burgeoning cultural space around menopause. We're carving out space to knit together a tapestry of rich experiences, and making a space to create.

But we need your help to do this. Any donation helps smash the silence and erasure gofundme.com/f/r9tszw

in reply to Vagina Museum

Oh wow.

Donated! I couldn't match the thousand quid one that was up at the top of your "recents" list (congrats!) but love the cause. Hope there's some virtual component as this gets developed, as I'm in North America.

GOP slur. “Democrat” is a noun, “Democratic” is an adjective.

“Sen Joseph McCarthy helped popularize the term.

Over the decades, Democratic party became assoc w liberal policies, & eventually, “the ‘Democrat party’ slur became condemnation of liberalism itself”..Phrase was huge hit in 90s & 2000s; Gingrich, Limbaugh & GW Bush played it on repeat. By following decade, Trump was mandating the word: “The Democrat party. Not Democratic. It’s Democrat. We have to do that.”

I feel this will become more of a problem as time goes on and C devs that are stuck in their ways and unable/unwilling to work with other tech will cause Linux to loose quality developers for other, possibly upcoming OSs, like Redox

@noam @koen_hufkens I agree as a socialist, but I don't think these are mutually exclusive. If it helps convince people that aren't marxists (yet!?) that capitalism is the problem, I'm for it. We're all working towards the same goal. And I think we marxists can learn stuff from them too (like shifting away from a productivist mindset that sometimes dominates within its circles).
in reply to Monsieur Delafin

@mysteriarch @noam @koen_hufkens I agree with that, and having the research on sustainability available will be useful when the conditions for trying these ideas come around.

I'm definitely not opposed to more research in this area, I just think we need to be clear on what the core problem we're facing is.
