The day to talk about safety was the day before the shooting. Or the day before that. Or any of the thousands of days since Columbine. Or all the way back to the tower shooting at the University of Texas in 1966.
But they haven't talked about it yet, at least not in any serious way, so today is as good as any. Better than tomorrow.
I think the conversation should be about the fact that after years of rising deaths due to mass shootings, they are still happening because state and national leaders keep blocking attempts to take any action at all, with the follow up of , "so when are you going to resign, since this shooting happened on your watch and all your prior actions have been <details of prior non-actions/blocks>.
Could media just stop letting these political leaders brush off the question?
