The latest episode of @ouropinions represents one of those glorious moments when @charliejane and I got to do TWO things we've always wanted to do: talk about microaggressions in scifi, and talk to the brilliant @evelyndouek about the future of content moderation. It's a great listen, with two chunky segments that will make you rethink writing and the internet. ouropinionsarecorrect.libsyn.c…

Chewy listening. :D

The mention of Fantasies of Manners and the Oscar Wilde plays, reminded me of Moliere's "Le Bourgeois gentilhomme"

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_Bourg…

It's a nice example of the In-Group aiming barbs at the Out-Group.

Micro-aggressions were used normally by the nobility, but were always aimed at people of lower social status.

Just another tool of control.

Although I had used a lot of #garlic in my dinner tonight, #LΓΊthien didn't seem to mind. Playing with my beard, or possibly searching for a teet, she must have smelled the gardlic.

I think, with few exceptions, cats rarely seem to classify smells as good or bad as humans do, but rather as interesting or uninteresting. ;)

This is EE, we've yet to see Extinguish yet. This is kinda how APIs grow, see also: browser APIs.

Someone implements a new api, makes it usable. Other users can also implement or tweak, and later down the line it is standardised by a committee (or by defacto).

Extinguish is only really possible if you can add an API that your competitors cannot implement, either due to technical reasons or licencing. ActiveX was what did it for Browsers.

The fact that this API has been implemented means that Extinguish has not happened.

I've never really liked Future Islands but I just heard their latest release and I dig it. youtu.be/k1944lXe9_I?si=QNl3yf…

I find then very hit or miss (mostly miss, same as your experience with them) but they manage an interesting tune from time to time. I'll give this a listen.

I guess what #America πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ needs is a government by the billionaires, for the billionaires. πŸ™„

πŸ‘‰πŸΎ #Trump announces plan for #ElonMusk-led β€˜government efficiency commission’ theguardian.com/us-news/articl…

But seriously, they leave out the details on which regulations they will cut.

My opinion: this is a bad idea & will turn the #UnitedStates πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ into a theocratic plutocracy (as the #Project2025 crew will definitely have a say!).

Open source is the libertarianism [derogatory] of the software world. It's the adolescent, knee-jerk "don't tell me what to do" of licensing.

And just like libertarianism, it's completely co-opted by big money interests using the sentiment to entrench their own interests over the needs of real human beings.

Copyleft on the other hand is punk as fuck. Copyleft is anarchist praxis for software. Copyleft builds community. Copyleft ensures code belongs to actual human beings in perpetuity, even as it grows and evolves.

Fuck open source. Use copyleft licenses.

Project 2025: Political winner or loser?

Project 2025 - you've probably heard about it. It's a roadmap from the conservative Heritage Foundation for the next Republican president.

It's also been a major talking point for Democrats on the campaign trail. Donald Trump, meanwhile, has tried to disavow it and distance himself.

That's because the plan has attracted negative attention over the ultra conservative policies it endorses like overhauling and eliminating some government agencies, firing thousands of civil servants and a mass deportation campaign.

Project 2025 was created to help the next Republican President execute an extreme conservative agenda. Now it's also become an attack line for Democrats.
