When the 1991 movie adaption of The Commitments hit cinemas, a whole new generation was introduced to soul music, and big bands.

Remember, this was the post-punk era. Most musicians were 3-4 piece rock bands; from The Cure and The Smiths, to Dire Straits and Def Leppard. Or solemn duos noodling on keyboard and synths (eg Pet Shop Boys, Soft Cell). Or hybrids of both (Genesis, Devo, Yello). By the end of the 80s, big bands like UB40 and Huey Lewis and the News were the exception.

The Commitments sunnier vibes even seem to have infected Blur's The Great Escape (1995). Even as its lyrics hold on desperately to the whimsical social commentary of earlier albums, in tracks like Charmless Man, Mr. Robinson's Quango, Country House and Entertain Me, that big band joie de vivre comes through. I hear it too on their experimental self-titled follow-up, in tracks like M.O.R and especially Song 2.

Crossing the Atlantic, The Commitments wasn't such a hit at the US box office. But the soundtrack album did make a splash - peaking at #8 - and I hear its influences in US music too.

Contrast Cracker's 1992 self-titled debut, with song titles like Don't Fuck Me Up (With Peace and Love) and their first Top 40 hit Teen Angst, with Kerosene Hat (1993) songs like Low and Get Off This. Or even Cake's decision to cover disco classic I Will Survive, for their second album Fashion Nugget (1996).

Ironically, The Black Crowes, the US band most reminiscent of The Commitments, were almost certainly *not* influenced by the film or its soundtrack. Their debut album Shake Your Money Maker is known for She Talks to Angels, and an inspired cover of Otis Redding's Hard to Handle. A song also recorded for The Commitments, and released as a single with the soundtrack album. But Money Maker was released in February 1990, more than a year before the film premiered in Hollywood in August 1991.

I can easily imagine the success of The Commitments helping 4 Non Blondes to get a record deal for Bigger, Better, Faster, More! Released in 1992, the album is known for What's Up? A soul-searching ballad that became a global #1 as the album's second single.

I can also image it giving a leg up to Counting Crows, whose 1993 debut August and Everything After shares the same kind of rootsy, soulful big band sound. Even Joshua Kadison's 1993 one-hit wonder Jesse could have ridden the wave.

With Remedy, the big single from the follow-up album The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion, its easy to imagine the success of The Commitments helping the band sell the studio on its big band approach. Things like including the backup singers, and playing up the honky tonk piano in the mix (and in the music video). But that album was released in May 1992, and chances are it would have already been in production by the time the film and soundtrack album were released in August 1991.

When it comes to music, the 1990s are mostly remembered for grunge and nu metal, at the noisy end, and RnB ballads by the likes of Mariah Carey, Boyz 2 Men and Celine Dion at the mellow end. The big band soul revival, which The Commitments were such a big part of, is mostly overlooked, and tragically so. Because IMHO, this is some of the best and most enduring music the decade produced.

When I was writing this thread, I thought of but forgot to mention #SoulAsylum's Runaway Train (1993). Definitely a Commitments influence there.

Their next album Let Your Dim Light Shine came in 1996, and was clearly influenced more by the Smashing Pumpkins Melon Collie double album (1995). It has a good song or two, but ...

So today I learned that #OBS can load Linux VSTs. My favorite compressor is made by #LSP (Linux Studio Plugins).

I expect my videos to sound SO much better.

Also, if you haven't already, start using lsp-plug.in

Ignorance of how EVs work is holding back uptake, says survey

The survey "asked 1,000 UK petrol/diesel car drivers ten questions about electric cars, mainly focused on popular pieces of misinformation that has been pushed by the oil industry and other entities that oppose cleaner, better vehicles.

The survey found that this #misinformation is alive and well – and particularly alive and well among drivers who haven’t driven an #EV."

Let's be realistic about this:
You won't hear stuff like that from news outlets that rely on advertising revenue from automakers.

Turns out the money needs to be removed, not so much from "politics",* but from the news media.

*Because money to politics goes to the media.

Last year, I was planning on getting a hybrid (no cars is not an option where I live). My wife was looking at EVs, and my analysis was that EVs still have a public charging issue in the US, from which hybrids are free. EVs need more planning and time invested in case of road travel. My wife finally said "we need to move fast to start fixing things. We have relied too long on our own comfort, and it did not work out. So we need to be uncomfortable now and fix things."

So EV we got. I am not going back to ICE.
