Only in Scotland would this question even be asked.
Imagine Norway saying, "Let's give all our energy revenues to Sweden and wait to see what they give us back. I'm sure they'll play fair."

The wonderful folks at Graymalkin Lane interviewed me about Escapade, the trans superhero I co-created for Marvel. This was such an awesome conversation, and I'm so glad it's now free for the public!
When the 1991 movie adaption of The Commitments hit cinemas, a whole new generation was introduced to soul music, and big bands.
Remember, this was the post-punk era. Most musicians were 3-4 piece rock bands; from The Cure and The Smiths, to Dire Straits and Def Leppard. Or solemn duos noodling on keyboard and synths (eg Pet Shop Boys, Soft Cell). Or hybrids of both (Genesis, Devo, Yello). By the end of the 80s, big bands like UB40 and Huey Lewis and the News were the exception.

A Mother of an Arrest Record!
Marcee Gray, the mother of the suspect in Wednesday’s Apalachee High School shooting, has a criminal record spanning more than 17 years and four counties, court records show.

So today I learned that #OBS can load Linux VSTs. My favorite compressor is made by #LSP (Linux Studio Plugins).
I expect my videos to sound SO much better.
Also, if you haven't already, start using lsp-plug.in

In Aotearoa, horn sections are now a standard feature in bands like Salmonella Dub and Fat Freddy's Drop. But without that film, it's hard to imagine a big band like Supergroove getting a major label deal in 1994.
Back in the UK, it's hard to ignore vocal echoes of Andrew Strong - who played The Commitments frontman - in Rocks by Primal Scream (1994) or Reef's Place Your Hands (1996).

Contrast the cynical angst of the first Supergrass album I Should Coco (1995) with the soulful sounds of Sun Hits The Sky and Going Out (1997). Or the 1994 Oasis debut album Definitely Maybe, with its songs about Cigarettes & Alcohol and being Married with Children, with the heartfelt belters of (What's the Story) Morning Glory? (1996), by far their best known hits.

Even as its lyrics hold on desperately to the whimsical social commentary of earlier albums, in tracks like Charmless Man, Mr. Robinson's Quango, Country House and Entertain Me, that big band joie de vivre comes through. I hear it too on their experimental self-titled follow-up, in tracks like M.O.R and especially Song 2.

Contrast Cracker's 1992 self-titled debut, with song titles like Don't Fuck Me Up (With Peace and Love) and their first Top 40 hit Teen Angst, with Kerosene Hat (1993) songs like Low and Get Off This. Or even Cake's decision to cover disco classic I Will Survive, for their second album Fashion Nugget (1996).

Their debut album Shake Your Money Maker is known for She Talks to Angels, and an inspired cover of Otis Redding's Hard to Handle. A song also recorded for The Commitments, and released as a single with the soundtrack album. But Money Maker was released in February 1990, more than a year before the film premiered in Hollywood in August 1991.

I can also image it giving a leg up to Counting Crows, whose 1993 debut August and Everything After shares the same kind of rootsy, soulful big band sound. Even Joshua Kadison's 1993 one-hit wonder Jesse could have ridden the wave.

Things like including the backup singers, and playing up the honky tonk piano in the mix (and in the music video). But that album was released in May 1992, and chances are it would have already been in production by the time the film and soundtrack album were released in August 1991.

in reply to Strypey • • •When it comes to music, the 1990s are mostly remembered for grunge and nu metal, at the noisy end, and RnB ballads by the likes of Mariah Carey, Boyz 2 Men and Celine Dion at the mellow end. The big band soul revival, which The Commitments were such a big part of, is mostly overlooked, and tragically so. Because IMHO, this is some of the best and most enduring music the decade produced.

When I was writing this thread, I thought of but forgot to mention #SoulAsylum's Runaway Train (1993). Definitely a Commitments influence there.
Their next album Let Your Dim Light Shine came in 1996, and was clearly influenced more by the Smashing Pumpkins Melon Collie double album (1995). It has a good song or two, but ...
