Kennt ihr das Sprichwort

"Scratch a liberal and a fascist bleeds"?

Not a complaint. And unlike the previous jackass I don't think you had anything to do with it. (note: I'm not saying I'm not a jackass, just not the size or type of the other jackass)

France yesterday arrested then released nurse Imane Maarifi who spent 15 days volunteering as a medic in the Gaza Strip.

Lawyer Rafik Chekkat, founder of the Islamophobia platform, said Maarifi was arrested in the morning at her home and taken into custody.

He criticised the arrest and said it took place at a time when French soldiers who fought in Gaza “enjoy total impunity.”

As the onslaught on Gaza continues, Ankara is facing calls to cut off oil shipments to Israel through a pipeline it doesn't own and oil it doesn’t produce.

Should the International Court of Justice (ICJ) determine Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. Countries such as Turkey, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan could be viewed as violating the duty to prevent genocide by supplying fuel and raw materials to Israel.

Just launched our online store selling open-source scientific equipment for UK folks! 🎉 labcrafter.co.uk

Our #DNS `domain` crate for #rustlang is progressing in three parallel tracks: Ximon's #XFR Zone transfers with #TSIG is nearing completion, a proof of concept for query routing by Philip is ready for review so he can turn his attention to the #DNSSEC signing milestone, and Terts and Jannik have kicked off reimplementing the `ldns` tools and example programs in #Rust.

All development is #OpenSource and in the open you can follow the progress and contribute: github.com/NLnetLabs/domain/pu

This is so cool/kind

(AND they're using machine learning to actually do the thing 'for humanity' that companies selling ML to the pharma industry claim it will , but that of course their version will not actually do, given the incentives♄)

@oraculix I'm a huge fan of 404 Media, so I pay. But I am also glad that people who can't afford it can benefit.
in reply to Meredith Whittaker

Though I've seen quite a few quotes or excerpts of 404 articles, this was the first time I read a full one on their website. I wouldn't have bothered reading further had it been paywalled. But I'm sure they deserve a lot of subscribers.

Now, if only there was a simple, widespread and privacy-friendly way to micro-pay individual articles! Like @signalapp is to messaging, maybe even with a foundation backing it...

Sorry for digressing, my utopian glands gained control.

At least eight Palestinians were killed in airstrikes by Israeli warplanes targeting two homes in Gaza City on late Thursday and early Friday, according to local sources.

In the Zeitoun and Al-Sabra neighborhoods of Gaza City, Israeli artillery shelled homes and civilian property, while helicopters fired rounds, according to witnesses.

The Israeli army also demolished homes near the Nitsarim Axis south of Gaza City.

Just want we want in our leaders: men who say mass murders of children are a "fact of life" we should just lump because they won't do a damned thing about it.
JD Vance calls reality of school shootings a bleak ‘fact of life’ washingtonpost.com/politics/20

in reply to Jeff Jarvis

Two words for JV Vance and they're not happy birthday.

Increasing gun safety laws decreases gun violence. This is a fact.

Banning military style weapons for civilians means this 14 year old could not have been given an AR15 for his damn birthday by his gun culture run amok father and could not have used it to shoot and kill 4 people and injure 9 more.

This is just plain common sense of which Vance has none.

in reply to Jeff Jarvis

This is why we can't allow abortion to be legal: we'd run out. Because it's a fact of life that we can't do anything about.

It all makes sense when you think of it in systemic terms.

Sigh.

A couple of days ago, I finally finished moving the last of my stuff into my new home. As anyone who has done this before will understand, I didn't get much else done for the past week or so. So now I'm preparing to triage the backlog that's piled up.

More details here;

I just did a tally, and worked out that this is my 43rd home. I'm not including all the places I've stayed, even for weeks or months. Just the ones I've actually called home. 43. Phew!

Living in China for 2 years showed me exactly what it's like to live in a country where people lack the basic civil liberties we take for granted in liberal democracies. To the point of wondering if we even have them when capitalists make significant progress on undermining them by stealth.

We do have them, but they're not a given, and we can't afford to take them for granted. We need to use them to defend them, at every opportunity.

in reply to Strypey

@strypey While it's is free in the sense that I could try to start something up myself, much of the US media (and I'm sure in other countries as well) has been bought up by large conglomerates to mainly control the communication and manufacture consent. I didn't have the resources to "roll my own" for every compromised aspect of life here.
