It has happened more than once in #neuroscience that what looked very much like a decision when observing the behavior, lost the 'air' of decision-making upon neurobiologiocal scrutiny.
What actually is a decision and how do we best study them?
If I understood what I just read, you are positing that the "losing" stimulus is perceived, but the organism is prevented from acting on it, and here:
>>As an aside: if so, what are the ‘losing’
>>stimuli perceived as?
you are asking about the conscious experience of the organism. Does the "looming threat" look the same as always, or does it look different as a result of blockade of the neurons that would respond to it as a threat?
I was wondering if you have any kind of answer?
Yes, this is precisely what I meant, and I can only speculate what flies may experience.
When drunk, people often don't take dangerous situations seriously, even though they can perceive most aspects. Maybe at the end of courtship, flies experience something related?
🚀 I just converted my open source projects to use uv for installation, with the new setup-uv action ( github.com/astral-sh/setup-uv ) and tox-uv ( pypi.org/project/tox-uv/ ). (They already used uv’s 'pip compile' command to pin test dependencies.)
For the smaller projects with fast test suites, I saw up to a 3x improvement, thanks to all the setup overhead shrinking (e.g. 1m40s -> 40s).
The latest release 1.13.0 fixes a cert-based authentication bug and improves the plugin code.

What is a decision?
In a discussion about what decisions are, John Krakauer emphatically pronounced that "decisions happen for reasons", in answering 'no' to my question if it wasn't a decision with which foot to start walking from a stand-still. A recent article from the laboratory of Carolina Rezaval in Birmingham studied a decision-making process in male Drosophila fruit flies where the reasons for each decision seemed apparent.
Ha, voilà la clé 'des coudées franches" pour continuer le ball-trap:

in reply to Kate Nyhan is changing servers • • •The only small point where I disagree with Julia Doubleday's description of HICPAC meetings is the part about "hours of academic debates."
If academic = having no useful significance, then sure.
If academic = trying to understand the world through curious and honest science - in that case, HICPAC's debates aren't academic. They aren't even explicitly about cost-effectiveness. They are about "feasibility" as understood by representatives of management at behemoth healthcare organizations.

* Meetings are now being livestreamed and recordings are posted, instead of advance registration being required to view the meeting.
* Meeting presentations and materials are now posted, instead of requiring attendance at meetings to view them.
* Voting occurs after committee members hear public comment, instead of before.

* Additional experts, including occupational health and industrial hygiene experts, have been added to HICPAC’s Isolation Precautions Guideline Workgroup.
* it is not yet clear that HICPAC fully recognizes the science on aerosol/inhalation transmission. Nor is it yet clear that HICPAC will recommend the robust protections needed by health care workers and patients, including strong recommendations around ventilation, respiratory protection and other PPE, source control and isolation, and other measures.
Sign NNU’s NEW petition<act.nnu.org/sign/urge-cdc-prot…> urging HICPAC to make sure that updated guidance addresses the science and protections needed.

HICPAC's strategy for dealing with the entirely new paradigm uncovered by engineers and aerosol experts in 2021- because, bear in mind,
the work of scientists like Linsey Marr showed that no viruses are spreading via "droplet" alone,
the way scientists formerly conceptualized their transmission
- is utter denial.
It would be too disruptive to decades of infection control norms to acknowledge that SARS-COV-2 came in like a wrecking ball to previous guidance;
thus, HICPAC members are pretending they've never even heard of COVID.
Watching their public facing meetings is bizarre;
hours of academic debates where the pandemic isn't mentioned,
followed by 45 minutes of activists explaining that they are unable to access medical care,
or that their loved ones caught COVID in the hospital and died.
HICPAC members remain utterly stone-faced throughout these sessions and fail to acknowledge the comments at their next session.
