#OnThisDay, 6 Sept 2013, American Marin Alsop becomes the first woman to conduct the Last Night of the Proms in London.
The Promenades (“Proms”) were established in 1895 to encourage a love of orchestral music. Since 1927, the BBC have organised and broadcast the concerts. The last night of the proms is the most high profile concert, with a lot of flag-waving and singing along.
The National Wallace Monument is one of Scotland’s most distinctive landmarks :
The National Wallace Monument (Wallace Monument), a 67m tower on the shoulder of the Abbey Craig, a hilltop overlooking Stirling in Scotland. It commemorates Sir William Wallace, a 13th-14th Century AD, Scottish hero.
The tower was constructed following a fundraising campaign, which accompanied a resurgence of Scottish national identity in 19th Century AD.

The majority of the victims of Israel’s war on Gaza have been women and children, according to data released by the strip’s Government Media Office on 5 September.
The data reveals that “69 percent of the victims are children and women.” The number of dead children alone stands at 16,715, while the number of women killed stands at 11,308.
