Am watching patchwork with much interest. Is a great balance of "move faster than the main fork of Mastodon can (or should given the relatively big and dependent user base) but then patchwork can also feed back into that main fork innovation that are road tested on smaller scales and work. #IndiewebSocial #Admin #fediadmin

This is disgusting. Americans have so many shootings - in our schools, our places of worship, our concerts, our streets - because we have lousy gun laws in America and people like JD Vance have stood in the way of reforming them. washingtonpost.com/politics/20…

The Onion keeps re-running this story from 2014 because those people who prioritize the ability of Americans to carry out extra-judicial killings keep getting elected. They may be incapable of action. But you are not. VOTE THEM OUT. /fin theonion.com/no-way-to-prevent…

Postscript if it's not already clear. Over 5000 people a year are dead solely because of GOP gun policies. It's not inevitable. It is a choice they made. thirdway.org/report/the-two-de…

What’s that smell — and how’d you know?

From @KnowableMag: "It’s clear that genes, receptors and neurons all play a role in detecting odors. But much of how we make sense of what we sniff remains mysterious. A neuroscientist explains."

Stopped (working) to water the flowers.
Now I need to hunker down, dig through some Excel spreadsheets.

May your Friday be kind to you.

Engineers in China used an ancient sword-making technique to overcome a modern manufacturing problem.

They needed to create a massive steel bearing for a tunnel boring machine, but preventing uneven cooling and weakening of the steel during manufacturing was a challenge. They adopted the clay-covering method used in making the ancient "Sword of Goujian" to ensure uniform temperature change during the quenching process.

A budget offering with a torque sensor (good!) and a whole lot of issues (not good).

Thank you for this great tool! I'm only using it from time to time, but even without practice it's intuitive to use and perfectly fits its tasks 😃
