Alas, the problem is the "normies critical mass". If Linux becomes popular enough that normies are running it en masse, there will be too much pressure to cave in or even to normalize installing games (and their DRM) as root.
Now, in theory, there is absolutely no technical reason why a game (any game) can't run with user level privileges only, including for their anticheat. As we are expecting people to install and run their stuff at user privilege level (eg.: via Flatpak), the expectation would be that cheats are running at user level as well. Server side anticheat with basic (non-invasive) client attestation makes pretty much any effort to go up to root moot.
