that this is one of the most popular posts on mastodon currently is a clear indication of how widely pervasive the reply-guy problem is here, and that its not just a few obnoxious person that contribute to the problem
when someone posts a link to a paywalled article, posting 'paywall-didnt read' is rude, obnoxious and simply unnecessary. the simply course of action is to ignore the post and move on. that nobody says so in the comments worries me

At the "Vintage Computer Festival Midwest" ( vcfmw.org ) and had an insulin attack, but there's no food sales in the expo hall, so I go exploring the rest of the (large/multi-event) convention center looking for sugar.
I must have been wearing the right uniform though, cause several times I got approached by concerned people wanting to make sure I knew the nerdcon was back the way I came.
None of them knew where to find sugar, but I eventually located a vending machine.
Good grief.
I remember paying $1 for a bottle of soda in 2010 and feeling ripped off.
Now I realize it was probably subsidized by my employer (or sold near cost for them).
That's only $1.44 in 2024 money.
I see bottles going for no less than $2 now.

in reply to Laurens Hof • • •Remember when Mastodon added reminders about basic social/online etiquette?
techcrunch.com/2023/11/22/mast…
Honestly, they should remove the "Don't remind me again" option, and add it to the web interface as well.

in reply to Stefan Bohacek • • •@stefan I would definitely like to see this in the web UI. Though I'm not sure what it'd look like.
But I’d probably argue majority of the "reply guys" aren't using the official apps or the web UI.
Stefan Bohacek
in reply to Emelia 👸🏻 • • •@thisismissem That's an interesting hypothesis.
Still, maybe just a little reminder that says "Life is short, not every post needs a reply" when you want to respond to someone who doesn't follow you might help.
Emelia 👸🏻
in reply to Stefan Bohacek • • •@stefan yeah, but it's still a difficult design thing, like where would you put that in this design? There's not really enough room for it.
A modal dialog would probably appear clunky if it were only to go back to the sidebar to compose the reply.
Stefan Bohacek
in reply to Emelia 👸🏻 • • •@thisismissem Yeah, I'm not really a designer, so I don't have an easy answer.
But I do appreciate that you're seriously considering the idea!

in reply to Stefan Bohacek • • •@stefan @thisismissem i appreciate you taking it seriously Emelia, (and your work in general), but I don't think this is a problem that you can design your way out of
think you can only fix this by the community at large coming to a conclusion that this behaviour is unacceptable and should be called out. which is a bit of a challenge, to put it mildly, seems the wide consensus seems to be that this behaviour is fine lol

in reply to Emelia 👸🏻 • • •@thisismissem Absolutely agree that you can't fix this with technology alone, but I like the idea of little "nudges".
Not sure how much this would help, but considering how big of an issue this is, maybe worth trying?
Emelia 👸🏻
in reply to Stefan Bohacek • • •@stefan you probably could create an issue for it, but I also think it's something the mastodon team are already investigating.
I think something that'd be really good to see is a documentation section on "UI guidelines & recommendations for client apps"

in reply to Stefan Bohacek • • •fwiw, recently there was a conversation on "spanish mastodon" regarding alt text in images and why people use it and lots of people mentioned they've realized it was a useful option after seeing reminders on their clients.
I agree that little nudges can make a difference even if they aren't silver bullets.

Unknown parent • • •@ophiocephalic @thisismissem Yes, we definitely need better reply controls, for sure.
I just see this as an additional tool, all of them working together.
Stefan Bohacek
in reply to Stefan Bohacek • • •@ophiocephalic @thisismissem I definitely see where you're coming from, I just feel like the situation is so bad right now that it's worth trying, just for a bit. I would like to believe that at least some folks contributing to this problem are not trying to be malicious.
It's a bit like the "Replies from other servers may be missing" that was just added. Just a gentle reminder to think before you reply. And that's something we can all use every now and then.
Stefan Bohacek
Unknown parent • • •@thisismissem @ophiocephalic What if it was something more subtle, like the "Replies from other servers may be missing" note I just mentioned?
"You don't follow this person, be nice!"
Something short and simple?
Emelia 👸🏻
Unknown parent • • •@ophiocephalic @stefan if it's “you see this once and then never again" or “you see this once every 6 months", it's not at all adding that much friction, that's what I'm getting at.
This wouldn't be "show this every time”
Stefan Bohacek
Unknown parent • • •@ophiocephalic @thisismissem That's a very valid question, and I would love to see some data on this myself.
Although, are those notices typically dismissible? Either way, I guess it's more of a hypothesis I'd like to test, to see if a more persistent reminder could possibly contribute to a social change, over time.

in reply to The Nexus of Privacy • • •@thenexusofprivacy @trwnh @ophiocephalic @natematias @thisismissem I really like this.
I know people say that we shouldn't rely on technological solutions, that we need to change the culture, but I think we need tools that will help us achieve this change, and this might be a good step in that direction.
The Nexus of Privacy
in reply to Stefan Bohacek • • •Yeah. The underlying issues are cultural and social, but technology can certainly play a role, either by improving things -- or make things worse.
