On #WorldCleanAirDay, let me say this: Even if we can eliminate all COā‚‚ emissions from fossil fuels with carbon dioxide removal (CDR) deployments (we can't; not even close), we shouldn't keep setting carbon on fire because air pollution from combustion will still kill millions of people every year.

ā€œOut of the blue, someone wanted to pay me millions to tell the American people that Ukraine was our enemy, and Russia was our friend. I had NO WAY of knowing, that this guy Mr. Kalashnikov was a foreign agent, and all that money came from Russia. I am clearly the victim of an extremely advanced, covert operation here.ā€

Seriously? That is what they are going with?

in reply to Randahl Fink

Do stay vigilant though.

We in eastern Europe know a very common Russian propaganda tactic to be the ā€sloppy propaganda + smart propagandaā€

Itā€™s common for them to put in something that is overt and easy to find, so you think you are clever and found them out.

This could be just another honeypot to make you relax and forget to look elsewhere. Wouldnā€™t be the first time.

@DemocracyMattersALot one has to wonder how his mom and pop would have acted if still alive? I didnā€™t like either of them very much, but suspect theyā€™d be on the side of democracy.
in reply to Democracy Matters

@DemocracyMattersALot well, he does live in Texas, right? Heā€™s most likely afraid of what the Gov and AG will do. Or of being run of the road.

I don't really get why the KDE guys still insist on this atrocious lack of padding / spacing between UI elements. Even Microsoft figured this out by now.
in reply to gravitas_deficiency

Yeah sorta. First you gotta know what the problem is, good luck getting the average user to figure out the UI looks off because of the padding. Then you gotta know where and how you need to change it to make it better.

Customizing is cool for power users that like to fiddle with their settings, however it can't replace good defaults; not that I have anything against the defaults in this case...

in reply to imecth

Agreed. The great defaults in Plasma definitely are a major draw for me.
in reply to TCB13

Yes, I can't begin to express how much I love 5 cm of whitespace between every setting on Windows Settings pages.

Thanks, Microsoft.

in reply to TCB13

Some people (like me) like having a more compact layout

0% fixing the multitude of crippling crashes and bugs that plague the software making it unusable for daily computing.

You say this in the comments of a blogpost where they are precisely doing that

in reply to Leaflet

Don't see mention of fixes for the resume-from-sleep bugs that have been around since at least 6 :'(

Today in neat #gentoo #gnu #linux build logs: dev-python/pivy logs like this.

I propose a new technique for improving code quality in single-maintainer open source projects: Timeshifted self-reviews.

1. Write some code
2. Create a PR on GitHub
3. Leave it rotting there for 3 months
4. Take a look at it again, after having completely forgotten what the code does and how it works

Perfect chance to review your own code with fresh eyes! (I hope you'll be pleased and not disgusted šŸ˜‚)

OK, just put in my pre-order for a 13in #frameworklaptop with no os. I'm hoping that #debian loads up without too much hassle. #linux #foss #OpenSource

FBI dossier reveals putinā€™s secret psychological warfare in Europe

russian information warriors identified Germany as a particularly easy target for moscowā€™s influence, U.S. law enforcement said.

Legal clear-cutting for the German forest ā€“ At the instigation of the FDP and the forestry lobby, Agriculture Minister Cem Ɩzdemir has significantly gutted his planned forest law. Golden Feathered Friend

This bird landed atop an oak tree at the edge of the forest overlooking my backyard while Charlie and I were sitting outside this morning. It was way off and initially, without looking at the photos I thought "thrasher." However, after looking at the photos I thought it was a pine warbler (Setophaga pinus). I noticed though that it lacks the distinctive eye ring. So, I settled on juvenile Baltimore Oriole (Icterus galbula). What do you think?

My gallery contains more that 700 images that I've chosen to share. Most are there for their visual appeal but there are a few novelty images. You can check out my gallery at:

I use Merlin Bird ID by Cornell Labs, and love it! Itā€™s been very accurate in both photo and sounds identifications.
in reply to Apriloq

@apriloq

I use Merlin as well, I find that itā€™s not always accurate. But, it the case Merlin identified the bird as an oriole.

Happy ā€œStar Trek Dayā€ to all who celebrate.

In honor of the September 8th anniversary of the original Star Trek series premiere, Paramount Plus has assembled a free-to-watch YouTube playlist of the first episodes (including two-parters like ā€œEncounter at Farpointā€) of most of the franchiseā€™s series, along with a handful of shorts. Theyā€™re free from September 7th ā€“ 13th.

That doesnā€™t include Star Trek: Prodigy, which is over on Netflix, and not free.

Falling for financial scams may be a sign of early Alzheimerā€™s disease, suggests a new brain imaging study of older adults. Older adults with thinner brain regions linked to memory and decision-making ā€” areas often affected early in Alzheimerā€™s ā€” were more likely to be vulnerable to financial scams. byteseu.com/400710/ #Science
